Mini gauges on a 500 - anyone use them? Tach fit issue.
« on: November 24, 2012, 12:25:37 PM »
I have a set of 2.5" chrome mini gauges on my 500. My stock gauge faceplates looked horrible and I opted not to disassemble them to re-do their faceplates. I mounted the mini gauges straight to the triple and the speedo seems to be ok - mounts nice and straight. The tach, however, does not. I forced it to be nice and straight which put too much stress on the tach cable and subsequently broke the tip off. It went downhill from there... I ordered a new tach cable and then broke my tach cap assembly when removing the broken cable. Luckily, I have a new tach assembly on the way from another forum member. I can rotate the mini gauge out to the right to accommodate the cable, but I just don't like it. The fit issue is due to the headlight. The speedo side has a cutout to allow the lower mounted mini gauge, but the tach side does not. Anyone else using these gauges on a 500 and have any fitment ideas? I have stock 500 handlebars and headlight ears with no plans to change either. Thanks.

When I attach the tach cable I will probably have to rotate the gauge even further out (see pic #4).

I've never used these, but it looks like you could either make a different mounting bracket OR get longer mounting bolts and place a spacer between the bracket and the triple tree for more clearance.  This'll give you more room to work with.

I have the same gauges for my 750. You gotta atleast in your case tweak the brackets that comes with it or shim it and use(if need be) a longer bolt

Thanks. I was going to experiment with a spacer to give it more height off the triple. I had the same idea with different headlight ears and lowering the headlight, but I don't want to get into all of that just to mount these gauges how I'd like. There's also the option of turning out the speedo to the left the same amount the tach is to the right for symmetry... and my stock gauges work, the just look bad.

I think I'd just look into cutting and bending a cleaner mount from a piece of aluminum sheet.

I added some 1/2" nylon spacers and I think I will be OK with it for a while like this. There are some nice mounts out there for these mini gauges, but they don't fit my triple. I may circle back to it once I resolve some of my other more important issues.

The tach ratio must be selected for that motorcycle. Front wheel size and other factors.
