Installed those steel centered plug wires last night. Stopped off to a local snowmobile shop justa wonderin, and sure enough, they had that copper center wire. Not a big role , maybe 10 feet , so I split it with him and bought 5 feet of it. He says he always keeps it on hand because the older sleds run better on that and champion plugs. Who knew?
Today is tank cleaning day, my orange tank that I thought had some fuel left in it wasn't what I thought. Though all the rest of my machines sat under water in last years flood, this was the only one that took on muddy water on the inside of the tank. poured out the goo and did an initial clean out last night with simple green first to break up the gas/mud mix, toilet bowl cleaner for a half hour , then rinsed it out with boiling water and a hair dryer hoping to dry it out faster and not flash. Wasn't completely satisfied, so today I loaded it up with vinegar, and I'll do the boiling water rinse, dry it and put in some fuel and fuel line dryer and maybe some Seafoam for good measure.
Okay so I'm back from the barn, The orange tank looks alright, the outside of it took a beating even though I tried to keep the acids and rust off it, was very stained and wouldn't come off with soapy water, so I hit it with Mother's mag wheel cleaner and polish, rubbed the hell out of it, and now it looks better than when I started. While waiting on the tank, I decided to clean up the rear of the machine a bit.Cut a couple inches off that rear fender, installed a smaller tail light and found some signal mount from the front of a parts 550 that would transfer to the rear if I remove the fender  mount bolts and drill it out. Looks a little cleaner and not so heavy now. pics tomorrow.

The stock 550 rear section always looked a bit heavy to me,

I like it on my stock machines, but when I start stepping away from stock this usually gets something like this.

I was lucky that the tank cleaned up so well, that Mothers mag wheel polish works on everything.
I'm up in the air about seats, would a sock seat look too heavy? would a cafe seat look better (the traditional type) ? Or one of those Viet namese  cafe seats? Opinions?

Yeah, I know it's hard to form an opinion without at least one visual option, so

That's what a stock seat looks like from the rear

That's what it would look like from the front. I have a new seat cover just in case.
While doing the stare today, I remembered that I had some left over pinstripe laying around, thought that it should mimic stock a little. Everyone has always been straight with me before, is it too much?

That's looking good 8).  The stock seat would help keep the sleeper look, if you wanted to go that way.  I personally like the stripes on the tank, I would vote to keep them ;D

I recovered the seat and put it on , hate it, I would like to find a gunfighter style seat or build a fiberglass cafe style seat. Gonna look around and see what's available.
Switched from a 2 tube petcock to a single tube( I think it's off a 78 550) , the riveted type, but it gives ample room between head and carbs.
I used a beat sidecover on the electric side, had to cut it allot to fit around the chrome 650 trim , the otherside will be cut the same way, it's not my favorite, but will be in keeping with the classic look.
This already feels like it'll handle nicely . can't wait till spring.

Can I get a view of the left side of the tank and how the petcock clears the carbs?

What year is that tank? I could maybe use the old petcock on another of my bikes....

This is the tank that I am using it's a 550 tank, not a 500

but it came with dual tubes, so I took single tube petcock from from this stock black one

sorry about the pic, thought the year might be trackable through a visual. And the second cock fits like this

Hope that helps.

Scott, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to give you a concrete answer on which tank and which petcock was actually used. I did go through my pics on photo bucket to see what color that orange tank was orig ionally in order to track down the year. The nearest I can tell is that the orange tank was this

which I believe to be a garnet brown 76k tank, the black one with the orange stripe  ( the one with a riveted cock that is on the orange tank now) I believe to be the 77k. There is some confusion for me as I paint them when I have a chance and leave them hanging until I need a tank, and to further confuse identification matters, you never know what the PO swapped before it was purchased, and to top it off, around here I switch tanks around to see what I like best. Until the music stops, I never know which bike will get what tank. So this is the closest id  that I can give. Maybe someone who really knows could chime in.

Engine paint goes on in light coats and sets up better with heat.  light coats and a hairdryer first then a uniform thicker final coat  ,hitting it with a hairdryer until it is uniformly dry. you can stop a run with a hairdryer if you see it soon enough.
I've found that a hair dryer is almost as handy as a 10mm wrench, great for softening up the rubber parts while pushing the carbs back in, good for loosening up stubborn slides without damage ,it's the tool to go for when the torch is too much, and it makes a great hand warmer!

Scott I forgot to mention that the petcock that is on the orange tank now , delivers fuel from the backside on the horizontal, the tube does not hang downward.

I've been waiting fro a clutch cover gasket for over a week now, and this seat thing, I want to build one with a plastic pan that I can heat over the finished machine and form every contour. then shape the outer edges until I like it.  Foam it and staple the the cover to the bottom of the plastic. That doesn't sound like much to ask for right? Searched snowmobile seats, atv seats and dirt bike seats. Some seem to be a molded abs and others seem more pvc ish. Almost embarrassing to say, but the plastic liner in my pick up truck box may be the next victim. I'm on a dooms day mission, I want this 650 done by the 21 st or ...well it's the end of the world. Okay maybe it isn't an earth shattering issue, but it will keep me busy until the 22nd anyways. I've been outta work for a week and a half, so far , I've cleaned the house 3 times and have obsessed in the shop over items such as the above, to the point where nothing is getting done. I've taken maybe six weeks off in the last 10 years, I don't know how folks do it, makes me nuts. Hopefully it'll be short lived and get back to normal after the holidays, enough rant, I going out to cut that damn truck up and make a friggin seat for myself.

I hear you, I don't know how some people do it.  I've had a sore back for nigh on 12 months and the doctor has finally decided to do something about it.  He gave me a month off to start with, I'm only a few days in and I'm already going stir crazy.  What makes it worse is I can't lift anything of significant weight, or bend, so that pretty much excludes any work in the shed :(.  I can't wait to see what you come up with in regards to the seat. :D

Caution: what you are about to view is the work of a desperate man in search of a seat pan. While prowling around, he finds his first victim. Sized it up

and pounced.

Drilled it ,hinged it and put the rubber bumpers under it.

Speeding ahead through multiple layers of foam, stretching and stapling.

I should have chosen a heavier cover material this stuff was kinda thin, and doesn't hide my novice attempt at a no sew seat but in general ,I like it.

So, if we have many more tomorrows, I'm sure that I will get a more professional look then.

It's 4 pm here and it seems like any other day so far. Did get the clutch case gasket today, installed, oiled, charged the battery, pushed the button *click*. WTF this all worked in the last frame, going through everything electric to see what I missed including all isolating mounts . It just can't be that the solenoid or starter decided to quit at just that second, can't be. Back out to the shop to see what could be the problem. The only thing that I consider that wasn't an upgrade from the 550 to the 650 was the elimination of the kick start.

Went through it all including using old tire tube under the isolaters, pulled the starter, worked fine with no load . reinstalled everything, checked the connections and plugged it back together. Then, it occurred to me to check the battery that was on charge and the one that was next to the charger.  ??? Yup, the one that I was using was as dead as Old Kelsey's nuts, kept just enough charge to keep the lights on. Switched to the other battery, starter works fine, fired on a squirt of fuel. :o Doesn't seem to be getting enough fuel, time to recheck the fuel delivery after dinner. I put an inline filter on it, could be clogged, hopefully that's it as I really hate to have to pull  those carbs again.

The Clubmans that fit on a 500/550 do not work on a 650 tree. Didn't know. The spread between the forks are a bit wider on the 650 than they are on the 500/550. The bars wont swing forward enough to clear the fork mounting bolts on the upper tree. Oh well, guess they'll be mounted on a 500 or 550.
Just for giggles , I swung the old bars over and turned them around. Scrubs the tank and leaves a 1/4' + before the frame stops, besides limiting steering on the road, it would take a while to spin it around in the shop.

and it looks messy. Clip ons would be the way to go here.

I just went through DV2000NJ's  650 thread, looks like he has upgraded his bars to something that I might like. Think I try those before going for a set up clip ons. Looks clean and maybe a little more comfortable for longer rides.
