Hey
I have a 3 wheeler and I want to quiet it down a bit.
The current exhaust is just is stock, straight thru pipe.  I want to put a muffler on.

The problem is that it is already too rich, judging by the spark plug and a muffler will make it worse.
I want to make an old jet smaller, and try that.  To make it smaller I want to solder it shut and re-drill to size.  Not for permanent, just to experiment.

What do you think?

Go for it! It's not a big issue on a single to drill jets, unlike a four. Just be aware that the soldered and drilled jet may not flow the same as a similar sized stock jet.

EDIT Make sure it's not running rich due to a plugged-up air filter, first! ;)

we have been working on the "rich" problem for a while now.  Don't even have an air filter on now, it's snowing so not a problem.

I have a carb kit coming.  Also the spark plug cap is brocken so a new one is on it's way.
We have cleaned and cleaned the carb.  New rings and hone to bring the compression up to 150 measured right after it was put back together.  With a couple hours running I should check that again.

Good point about it being Ok because it's a single cylinder.

I can tell you I really respect those who have carb problems on our SOHC4's and fix it.
I have been driving one for 40 years and no carb problems yet.
