Summer of 2011 my commuter bike needed a rebuild badly. Instead of just doing a stock rebuild I decided to completely change the look. The bike started out as a 1990 kawasaki zr550 "zephyr". After I found a donor bike on craigslist, a 1999 kawasaki zx6r, the project began. Since I really didnt know what I was doing it took almost 10 months to complete.

I am really happy with the finished product. There have been no issues with the bike and I still commute it 50 miles 4 days a week. Although I am not happy with the bike's power and potential. Its a fun commuter and thats about it. So this winter I am moving on to bigger and much better things. I have decided to finally start the project Ive been wanting to do. Since I have a better idea on what to focus on I hope I can finish the bike by the end of the northwest winter/rain season. I regret not documenting my last project so I will do my best to post my progress.

These are the parts I will be messing with for the first part of the build. The stem looks to be a perfect fit after it is milled down to fit the lower bearing. The swingarm I am using just about fits, the frame only needs to be widened .25" to accept the 04 zx6r swingarm. The subframe will be cut and modified for a more cafe/fighter look. After im finished with the rolling frame I will focus on the motor. I will be doing a big bore 836cc kit, hd studs, hd springs, web cam, custom exhaust. I am still deciding what carbs to use and where Im going to place the oil tank.  I understand not everyone likes this look or have hesitations with modifying bikes from factory specs but thats the fun of it. I have years of experience with custom cars and have brought it into bikes. I hope to have some feedback from other members as I move forward, especially the ones that have experience with these bikes as I am solely going off of what I have researched and what I have done with my previous bike.

How much power did the ZR550 crank out?

With the bike jetted from 110 main to 122 17/42 sprockets it is only quick up to about 75 then it struggles till hits top speed of almost 100mph. I get tons of compliments for it, mainly because they cant figure out what bike it is. Its a good bike just has no grunt.

Is the Kawasaki for sale now that your building a new bike?

It's not officially for sale yet but will be. I was planning on using the money from the Kawasaki to pay for the big bore hd internals, carbs and tires.

I had to delay this build before it really got going because of some house renovations. I just finally got some time in on the bike this week. Started cutting and grinding away at the frame. Removed tabs and cut the subframe then started measuring and planning out the size and shape of the cowl.






I really wish I had a pipe bender...had to settle for an angled subframe, turned out pretty good though.

some updates.. I was able to work on the bike a little this week.

Cafe cowl: this will house the battery and electronics

Final product will be a full carbon fiber cowl. This is the mold it will form from.

I'm looking to use a 2006 USD ZX6R front end and wheels (the split 6 spokes) on my 77 F SuperSport, but I want to maintain the original swing arm, mainly the twin shocks. As you are the only one I've come across that's building something like this, I was wondering how hard it would be to do.
I've seen a up for sale which has this front end and matching wheels, with the original CB swing arm by the looks of it.

What work are you doing to the triple to fit it in the CB frame? Is it another steering stem swap or more work than that?

only thing that has me confused is widening the frame.....I would be worried something would end up out-of-whack without using a jig or at least some temporary ties welded in to keep the geometry in-check. I've put modern swingarms into vintage bikes myself, I've always narrowed the swingarm pivot rather than widen the frame.... Usually I take a measurement on the frame and then shop for a swingarm within a half inch or that width at the pivot, that way I only have 1/4" either side to make up for.

Curious to see how exactly you will do the swingarm. I have a cb500 and a 04 zx6 swingarm. Fits well but could use a spacer.
