150/90/16 tires???
« on: December 11, 2012, 06:08:32 AM »
I recently bought a 16/4 rim to build a rear tire for my 78K.  I was wondering if a 150/90 tire is going to require any changes to the rear end to accommodate it. Will the chain clear it? I have been told it may rub the tire and am considering getting offset sprockets. Will this rectify the issue, if it exists? With this size tire, are there any factors that might make me rethink getting a sprocket set that is equivalent to stock? I'm under the impression that a 150/90/16 is relatively the same diameter as a 130/90/17, which is on my bike now. Is that a reasonable assumption? Any thoughts/recommendations on the number of teeth in either front or rear sprocket that I might consider? For Christmas, please don't anybody buy me a can of worms. I've got plenty. Thanks.
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

That should be one FAT tire.  The 130/90 is quite fat as it is.  Hope it is not ugly on the build.  A lower profile might look better.  a 130/90 just barely clears the chain and bar on the brake hub on my wives 75k, barely.  I understand that there may be more room on the 77/78 swingarms and that the sprocket carrier is 10mm further out on those models.  I am running a 17/48 on the 75k and it works nice, dropping one tooth in the front and the smaller tire height (although not much) gives it a bit more kick.

You may or may not get many responses on this question based on how many times it has probably been asked.  Check out that Google search on the top left, it may give you more information quicker.  That search on the top right is broken.

I know I did not give you much info but it is something.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
