small update. had been having issues with my carbs letting liquid fuel through the intakes into the engine causing terrible gas mileage, around 28mpg. rode a little ways away and have been borrowing my buddy Ben's cb750 carbs. they fired right up and got me back to my 38-45mpg range. swell. I honestly didn't feel like messing with my carbs anymore so I bought another set (75F to match the engine!) from a guy here. they came with some funk but nothing missing or broken, and the floats floated, and the slides slid. Rebuilt them
The finished carbs. Before and after. Soda blasted inside and out. Taken apart and sonic cleaned. Then gone through each hole/passageway with guitar strings and carb cleaner. All clear and clean. Cleaned and buffed slides. Polished tops and bowls, bodies masked and painted (no paint gets inside). Cured at 200 degrees for one hour. Then cleared with 2k clear. New fuel T o-rings, new honda 5.5mm lines and 3.5mm lines. Bench synced, just need to vacuum sync with my Morgan pro tune. These guys fired right up!
It had 38 slow jets and 90 mains, I changed those out for 40 slows and 110 mains to match my hm341 pipes. so far I am not getting any stuttering or popping anywhere, it seems to run well. will be checking plugs soon. I did have an issue last night where I was getting a hanging idle. it would either idle at 3500 after revving or back to 1000 when I pushed the throttle forward. with the engine OFF the carbs snapped shut very well.....a little odd. I had a spare new throttle pull cable and tried that first. nailed it! took care of the issue right away.
even though my OEM pull cable was only 1 year old it has worn out (the jarring from the wreck probably didnt help. it is a motion pro on there now, but I will be ordering another OEM cable because I like how it feels, and I am a sucker for OEM. Just thought I would share that little bit of info in case someone has the same problem
so now I just need to run a tank of as through and see if these carbs are leaking fuel like my originals were. hopefully not and I can return Ben's carbs and focus on bigger things! the engine build is on hold, as is the 78F, my dad's bike is taking full time and money at this point! thanks for reading
