Everyone,

During the next couple of weeks, I'm planning to do some major site work to resolve a number of issues that have cropped up recently.

The forum will be migrated over to a new server so that I can improve the performance and reliability and take care of some of the issues with images and the like.  I expect to have the server down for at least a day.  After the new server comes up, it may take several days for forums.sohc4.net to point to the right place for everyone - usually there are no issues, but sometimes things can be a bit glitchy due to the way the internet works.  I'll do what I can to mitigate any issues around the site move.

I am also working on moving the www.sohc4.net site to a new web host and new software.  This requires that I change some things, but also gives me the chance to clean things up in general.  If you are interested, the "beta" site is running at www.sohc4.com and my (incomplete) project list is at

https://trello.com/board/website-redesign/50ca7ace6b0351be5400212f

If you have any comments or suggestions about the new site design/layout, I welcome all input.

Thanks for all your work on this, Glenn.

Let us know if there is anything that we can do. I will make a donation to the site today to help keep it running.

Thanks again.

That shows you dedication. That is a lot of work on our behalf.

You can make it a bit easier for the users Glen, if you post or mass email/pm the users the physical IP of the new box before you switch over.
This way the die hard users can just put the IP into the address bar and get onto the forums and such with out using a DNS look-up. Most hosting co. have a grace period that allow you to run with out the DNS and a few days could keep us from withdrawal like effects. ;)

I feel your pain Glenn...

I moved the UK site to my own company's webserver - it went OK but was a lot of work!

While you are experimenting, have you looked at Simple Portal? It gives a pretty cool (and easy to manage) front end to the site - see www.sohc.co.uk for an example.

Steve

Thanks for that suggestion, Steve.  I looked at simple portal quite a few years ago, but never went further than the tinkering stage.  I like what you did with it.  If that didn't require a lot of setup work, I might just go ahead and do it for this site while I'm doing all the other work.

I'm a bit behind on getting the new forums server set up since I've been wrapping up moving the www.sohc4.net site.

It's pretty intuitive Glenn.

I've used it on other SMF forums since then. I also did a customised one for a client with new colours etc (just CSS edits but customers love it!)

An update on the site changes.  The www.sohc4.net site has now moved over entirely to the new server.  Most of the content is complete including some things that were missing from the old site, but I have more to add in the coming weeks - articles, tech documents, images, and such.

After I finish moving all the SOHC/4 content around, I will go back to working on getting the forums moved to a new server.  That will take a while, so I'm probably looking at the end of January before everything is done.

Hey Glenn, I haven't received email notifications of replies to my posts, PM's etc for the last week or so, and I know of at least one other member in the same situation, is there some sort of "glitch"? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks for staying on the game Glenn. When I discovered and started posting on the old Greenspun forums way back in the early days of Al Gore's internet discovery I never would have guessed that it would evolve into what it has. The early days saved my bike and kept it out of the scrap heap. Later days allowed me to have a decidedly better sohc4 because of the world of parts and knowledge that became available to me through the sohc4 forums. I salute you and your dedication to the site and sohc Honda 4's.

Thank you Sir...is this where I ask for my kickback?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My hands just about stopped shaking from the withdraw.

That was a bad experience for an addict like me.

Thank you for keeping the site running.

On the plus side, while the site was down I actually got things done at work :-D
