« on: December 18, 2012, 03:36:30 pm »
So I sold a k1 tank to a new member on here with pictures attached of small dents/petcock needs a rebuild an gas cap seal. Shipped the tank same way it looked in the Pictures. Tank shipped ups ground 6 days well today I received a PM with pictures of the tank the way he received it. BIG dent all around gas cap SMASHED in. Package went out w/o tracking or INS. Any sellers/buyers  ever have this happen? If so what if anything did UPS/usps do, and what do you need TO do to get him reimbursed

No insurance?  Youre f**ked, probably.

Only UPS claims I have gotten are for insured packages with pics of the product before shipping and pics of the ruined product and packaging.  They have protocols online for claims.  Or call customer service.   But without insurance they aren't going to care a lot.

Not to be preachy because that does suck, but if it can break or be damaged, insure it.

A triple tree wrapped in bubble wrap and packed properly:  probably don't need insurance.

But if you can hit it with your fist and damage it, spend the extra $10.

This is not the first time i have heard this about UPS, I refuse to use them for any international shipping, use USPS now for everything and no problems.... I only ever had one item posted from the US with UPS and it looked like they used it as a football..... >:(

For UPS they require notification within 24 hours and you must retain the original packaging, photos help. May not do much as it was uninsured but I would at least call the UPS/USPS and make a claim

Unless UPS has changed I believe their packages are automatically insured for 100, anything extra cost money.  I used to sell a lot on Ebay and that was my understanding of their protocol...Larry

I hate to read about things of this sort. Both you and the buyer got screwed.

Last week, I sent a pair of gauges to England for restoration. UPS wanted about $140 and USPS (with insurance) charged $35. For the additional $100, I would expect UPS to behave better.

As a matter of course I always insure any package for at least twice it's value.  That way I am covered and the buyer could get his refund without it costing me my selling price (minus the minimal insurance cost).

I bought a nice CB360 fuel tank with original paint on ebay, and it arrived smashed just like that.
The seller had it wrapped only in a few layers of cardboard, and in a box barely larger than the tank.    All it takes is enough heavy boxes on top with the truck bouncing down the road to crush it.

When shipping a fuel tank, you should have about 5 inches of bubble wrap or packing peanuts the whole way around it.    I've bought many fuel tanks on ebay, and that was the only one that arrived damaged.

I had to go rounds with the seller, who was an a**hole, who, at first said that I must have dropped it after opening it.

So, after I finally got my refund, a few months later, I found a nicer one for less money, so it worked out.

Good luck with your claim.

Luap, I had this happen to me.. I sent lower K1 forks and a complete brake caliper.... He sent me pics of the box... I mean it was beat to hell. The one time I didn't get insurance on it. I was pissed and a part of me was curious if he was scamming me. I gave have him a huge deal on the complete set up...... I called my local PO and #$%*ed.. From my PO it went right to Atlanta where it had no purpose to go to ...... FOund out they send all damage boxes there... But have to deliver the box to the addressed person no matter the condition....... I called the guys local PO and they knew exactly who I was talking about...  My local PO took no blame and said next time get insurance.... Lucky for me I had a few K1 lowers and one last front brake caliper for a K1 laying around.... The buyer got another shipment, this time with insurance and I lost my ass on the deal.

Just to keep me as a good provider on parts here and cause I couldn't take someone's money without the product they paid I knew I was going to lose out.... I believe in bike karma. Good or bad......

MoMo is right ups had a automatic $100.00 coverage. They will pay you the cost but they will want the tank. I've shipped things with ups and there is a reason why I don't use them anymore. and your problem is the no. 1 reason why.

No offense intended but it may have not been packed properly.  Yes, they abuse the boxes, that is a given. It practically needs to be double boxed. I've bought three tanks from members here, well packed and no issues.
Like previously stated, you have $100 insurance, make a claim.

Here is what I learned after about 400 transactions.
Pack as if it will be dropped from 3ft cuz it probably will.
.Pack it like you would liketo see it arrive..

Most of us have been to an Airport, and seen the suitcases tumble down onto the carousel. Your package will see this or worse...I kid you not...

If you boxed a tank with 2 layers of cardboard, and dropped the tank 18 inches you couldnot do this. 2 feet ..maybe..or not..

I am sure that at the UPS and USPS summer picnic, one of the most coveted games to win is the PARCEL TOSS..

Ach. I recently sold a tank. Boxed it up as well as I could and went to the PO. USPS is kinda like the California DMV. Once in a lifetime you'll get someone with a brain who actually cares. The PO guy hefted my box, pushed on it some, and diplomatically recommended I use another box. He was of an age to remember the American Tourister commercials, so I took his advice.

I sold the tank. Does the shipper or reciever make the claim. Im guessing the reciever since he has the dented box.

As a former UPS employee, I can tell you that boxes are handled less-than-carefully.

If it was at the USPS Post Office and you did not have insurance for it you will be wasting your time. Sounds like you did not use UPS. If it was me I would probably refund the buyer and chalk it up to a learning experience.

I had a lot of buddies who worked at the local ups station when we were in college. They told me that they seriously abuse the packages and if it's not packed good it'll die.  I'm sure there's been a little reform as far as the way boxes are handled, but yes they get literally thrown around.  Pack as such.  I pack and send about 5 computers a week through UPS and have had no probs when packed correctly.  I also receive that many a week and people don't always pack them properly and I've seen some serious damage.   Treat all shipments like you're sending a Ming vase.... lol

Hey guys, alright, I did not want to come here, but I have no options as of now left. I am not the person who comes to a forum to blast people. Luap sold the tank to me. I have emailed and PM'd him a few times over the past 2 weeks and have no response. The tank is damaged, there was no insurance put on the tank, it was packed poorly, and now he is ignoring my PMs and emails on getting the tank back to him and the money back to me. if you have been to my build thread, you will know I am very detailed about things, this post will be no different. I am very frustrated and just want things settled. I don't know any other way to get his attention. this is an unfortunate situation but I paid for something, and I did not receive it. bottom line.

Here is the story in depth. I messaged Luap asking about his tank. he originally wanted $100 plus shipping. I offered $75 shipped. he counter offered with $75 plus shipping. so I counter offered with $100 shipped. we agreed and he sent it. He shipped it out USPS parcel post and when it arrived I was a little surprised at how small the box was (I wasn't sure the tank could actually fit in the box). the first thing I noticed was the shipping label clearly marked $17.08 for shipping. this isn't the biggest deal obviously but it is noteworthy.

when I opened the box there was minimal packaging. there were 5 clear plastic bags, one plastic grocery bag, one small cardboard box, and one bundle of that really thin foam sheeting. NOT proper packing materials. no bubble wrap at all. the TANK DOES NOT EVEN FIT properly with the lid closed. I am surprised on of the top edge sides wasn't bashed in because it was in direct contact with the box. 2 inches MINIMUM of proper packing material around something like this. like I said before, the shipping should have cost him $30 to $35, he paid $17 with a clear failed packing job.

I immediately let him know and he suggested I take it in to have USPS open up a claim. I filled out the online form from a link he gave me, and took it in. they ran the number on the box and it came up a "parcel post, no insurance, no confirmation delivery". just as I thought. UPS puts $100 automatic insurance on things you ship. USPS does NOT. they told me they are not responsible for any damages without insurance. I might add that on the USPS insurance claim page the way the process reads is that the shipper starts the claim anyway. Luap assured me that I file the claim because I have the damaged box/goods. I may be right or wrong but if you read it yourself it sounds like the shipper makes the claim. Not worried about that, just a note. I contacted Luap with this info from USPS a week ago by PM, and then again 5 days ago by email. he has not responded to either. he also has not logged on here since Jan. 1st. the email should have got to him as we have communicated that way before. He should at least send me SOMETHING even if it says "hey sorry, i don't have the money right now but give me a few days or so and I can get it back to you". I understand life happens, but when you sell something and put your name to it, back it. make your name worth something. we aren't all in the service industry or in customer service relations, but when you are selling something even over a public forum, you would be wise to try and represent yourself well.

I have over 150 100% feedback on ebay, and I have almost 100 100% feedback on www.talkbass.com , the other forum that I am on frequently. I'm not some golden seller, but I do my best to describe things I sell as honestly and best as I can. I want to completely please the buyer and make sure they are getting exactly what they think they are getting AND it gets to them in the shape I sent it out. while most other people do as well, you cannot forget about the shipping portion. the people working at UPS, USPS, fedex, and DHL do not handle boxes like its their stuff...well because it isn't. it's  business and they have a lot of packages to get out and around and throwing them and dropping them is going to happen, 100% of the time. I don't like it but I know it. PACK ACCORDINGLY

here is the shipping label

here is the packing material. let this be a lesson as how NOT to pack a tank

here is the tank inside the box with no packing materials. the petcock IS on and it butts up against the side of the box. not much clearance.

here is me showing how the tank actually stuck out of the box, pressing up against the cardboard. it should have 2inches of clearance with packaging all around
