Headlight Casing Fix?
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:55:58 PM »
So I have a cracked headlight casing (near the fork stations). I've heard that you could fix this by soldering the casing back together from the inside, sanding, and re-painting.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking I might give this a try before buying a new OEM/NOS headlight casing. Those things aren't cheap.

ABS plastic can be welded.  But, as this plastic ages it loses some of its make up to evaporation.  Melting/fusing such plastic makes it shrink and become more brittle.  You will, at least, need to add filler rod, and learn a new welding skill.

A bit easier is superglue, and a bridge patch (at least on one surface side) of nylon tape and epoxy.  The tape is applied to a clean surface that has be roughed up or even grooved, so the epoxy can grab on to something when subjected to later stress.

Like this option a bit better. Thanks!

Anyone know about re-painting a headlight casing?

I had a crack at one of the mounting bolts and per the forum used the super glue/baking soda route and it came out perfect.  Tried to flex the crack after the super glue and it would not budge.  Sanded it down and painted it, no problem!  I would highly recommend that process if what you have is a crack to fill!!

Is the 550k headlight bucket the same as the 500k headlight bucket? If so I have one, if you would still like a new one.
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!
