« on: January 29, 2013, 04:21:14 am »
Hi,

I am restoring a 77 K3, has anyone got the paint code for the original Black or a very very very close match.

Regards,

Honda calls the black paint for your 1977 CB550 K3: “Excel Black” and the Honda paint code is: NH-57. Problem is, that Honda didn’t publish the formulas for their motorcycle paint codes like they did for their automobile paint codes back in the day. :(

This leaves vintage Honda owners like us with a paint code that only has a reference and/or comparison value. Since you’re located in the UK, perhaps your English brothers can point you to a paint source?

Check with our UK sister site for more info: http://www.sohc.co.uk/

Sorry to revive this... but is the excel black really black? Or a dark brown. my 77, with original paint looks like a super dark brown in the sun but black in the shade. Its baffling to me.

Hello from a fellow SOHC enthusiast.

I have a 1978 CB500K K4 and I have to repair a minor gas tank repair due to a garage mishap. I took the tank to my local Napa Paint Store and had it scanned with with a paint matching spectrometer.

They then can, as closely as possible, match this to your original color. I'm a restoration enthusiast, at heart and I've found, in this instance that this mix works well for this application

This is a Martin Senior Crossfire 5.0 Base coat mix to be over their Clear:

The spectrometer camera they had provided this formula:
  • Napa (Martin Senior) Paint Code: 9040
  • Color: Black - 1999-2016 Mercedes-Benz
  • Napa Crossfire Platinum Base Coat 5.0
Mixture:

Color Code     Color Name         Mixture

CF100            Strong Black       69.5
CF124            Dark Yellow         93.6
CF110            Blue                   101.0
CF118            Oxide Red          102.8
CF123            Spec Effect         102.9
CR223            Basecoat FI        171.6
CR224            VOC Balance      217.2

VOC (#/gl) 5.49

I was told that this paint code is valid for any paint line or viscosity (for those who have to use the low VOC paint lines)

I hope this helps out. Please feel free to ask questions

Yes, that's typical Excel Black. When in doubt, one could contact specialist Menno at www.tanklackieren.de.

Good morning. For what it is worth I took my side cover to a paint store & they took a picture of it with the paint camera & matched my color very closely. I was very pleased with the results. 1973 cb500 brown.

No question here, just a picture post to show that (Martin Senior) Paint Code: 9040 is not at all a match!
