Correct Handlebar Controls
« on: January 29, 2013, 06:48:01 am »
Hey guys,

I'm working through the restoration of my 1974 750 K4. I'm starting to think about the handle bar controls. The wiring terminals have been cut off of mine so I'm looking to find the correct terminals to reattach. However, when I look at wiring diagrams they show controls with an on/off switch for the headlight on the right control. My control does not have this.

Wiring Diagram for K3-K7:
http://oregonmotorcycleparts.com/Diagrams/CB750k37.jpg

My right hand control (kill switch and start button)

My left hand control (horn, dimmer, and signals)

The wiring diagrams state I'm looking at K3-K7 wiring diagrams. Are there specific year wiring diagrams and these ones are just "close"? Or do I have the incorrect style of controls?

Thanks for your help guys,

IW

You right control is definitely wrong. For '74 it should still have the headlight switch and the throttle "friction adjuster" screw.

Well that might explain why my wiring was so hacked up to get it in there.

It all makes sense now... looks like I have a 77-78 right hand control which had the weatherpack style connector.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1977-1978-1978-Honda-CB750-Right-Hand-Control-Switch-Housing-Stop-/261076915043?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc9659363&vxp=mtr

I was wondering why I found a hacked off bundle of wiring inside my handle bars when I pulled them apart. Looks like the PO changed controls for a later year ... why? I don't know.

So my left hand control may or may not be correct....hmmm

Iron Worker, looks like some monkey business went on with your controls. :o

My 10/73 K4 is an original owner bike and here’s what my controls look like. At times, I’ve found that the wiring diagrams in the back of the Honda owners manual to be the most accurate/complete for a specific model. (click on images for best view)

Nice. Good to know what a stocker looks like.

I'm considering just going with repops from vintagecb750.com so I don't have to d!ck with custom wiring.

This diagram is made from my factory schematic.

I added color for clarity.

Pretty common for people who don't care to cut off connectors so it's easier to remove wiring from bars  ::)
You need 3.5mm crimp bullets, easily available

It may be cheaper to source the correct switch with bullets still on though?

Is it possible that the Canadian versions are different than USA?

According to CMSNL a Canadian model didn't start until the K6.

One more question: In the wiring diagram it shows a ground wire coming out of the turn signal but the signal lights only have one wire for each filament coming out.

What am I missing?

I'm wondering if what you have is from a K0
The color is the same as mine?

All the controls for all years were originally anodized black.
Any color variation is due to age.
With exposure to the elements the anodizing will fade from black to that dull gray aluminum color or in some cases a violet color.

Yes there is much darker color on the bottoms. They are just very faded from the sun.

So I may have answered my own question about the ground. I believe there are two grounds have a ring connector that bolt under the headlight bolts. This may be what the are picturing as the grounds from the turn signals.

The fork ears are mounted on those rubber bushings so they are likely isolated from the common frame/engine ground.

Yep, that's exactly it.

Something changed 1st Jan, it takes a LOT longer at post office to fill in forms to ship stuff to Canada than to Australia (I've done both recently)
