What is considered light these day$ ?

I am planning a wheel for a small racer 18 x 2.5, with sprocket 47 t, rotor, bearings, carriers, tire...to come in at 24 lbs, or under. That is not counting axle, or caliper.

Still seems heavy , any weights to compare?

Frank, should be easy to get well under that. I've just weighed a Honda CB92 rear wheel.
2.75 tyre, tube and rim tape, 18" WM1 alloy rim, 36 stainless spokes, 8" alloy drum brake complete with actuating arm, sprocket carrier and steel sprocket, spindle with nut and wheel adjusters = 26lbs or with magnesium alloy drum, brake plate and sprocket carrier = 23lbs.
There must be plenty of wheels out out there that are lighter. If you are disc braked, the hub would be much lighter than the 8" drum brake plus you could use the steel sprocket as the disc. Just a thought.

Frank.....I used an 80s XL350 front for a rear by making a sprocket carrier......total weight with drum, axle, 21" tire and sprocket is just under 20 lbs. If you have to have the disk, you could do the same with almost any modern front wheel from an MX or Dual-Sport.

I forgot, that includes the 4.00 x 18. Tire.
Nothing light about Honda XL stuff the back wheel I got without tire is probably close to 35 or 40 lbs.
So far I got, 18 x2.5 mag wheel, it is 16 lbs with worn roadrace tire,but no bearing plates. Alum sprocket 47 t, and a thin Kawi front offroad rotor. I am thinking bearing holders with knockoff nuts maybe..

Hey Frank, check out the Honda CR bikes; they used much lighter parts overall. My CR480 came stock with a magnesium brake backing plate. Is this for a mini flat-tracker twin, by chance?

Yeah for the 350 2win.. This is all stuff laying around, should be into it for about a c note, not counting my labor.
A modern wider wheel may cause grief, I have a 18x3.5 mag should i need it..

My '82 CR came with a 2.15 DID rear rim. If you want light, look at the MX bikes. (understand the desire to use parts already on hand!)

Yeah, the early XL wheels are anchors.......later fronts.....light & cheap

. You could also put a sprocket carrier on modern MX and Dual-Sport front wheels and use the disk brake.

The wheel is 16 lbs. With tire..
Rotor is 3 mm

That wheel is an Astralite Made in the UK by Dawson Harmsworth Ltd, they are better known these days for the Scitsu rev counters.

Now that is light.................you may have trouble getting enough down-force on the suspension to keep it on the track when decelerating. Nice One Frank

I talked to a buddy today with modern Excels with billet hub..mutard style, and his was 24 ish lbs, WITHOUT sprocket and rotor..

for whatever it's worth, last night was playing around with a modern ducati 5" X 17" rear for a new project:
so with steel sprocket + cush carrier + stock disc, no axle, no rear tire = 20 lbs.

My guess is that na Alu sprocket and spacers would shave a pound + from that figure

Shame that with disc brakes you still got to add the caliper and its carrier though

mind you, this is twice the width of a 2.5"....

You guy's got me curious so i weighed my rear RC COMPONENTS wheel and tire and the wheel and hub were 13 1/2 pounds, the tire is a AVON 200/55/R18 It weighs 15 lbs, and the aluminum sprocket maybe 1 lb, and 1 lb for a 10" rotor so.... 30 1/2 lbs total.
This is for my turbo'ed KZ 1000 prostreet project.

Hey Guzzi, there isn't any cush drive.

The eight bolts you see are for the sprocket. Yea add a pound for a 10' disc. So for a complete rear setup i'm looking at 30 1/2 pounds. Not too bad.

Now for the front.......

Wheel is 6 1/2 pounds, tire is 6 pounds, 10 1/2 " rotor is maybe 2 pounds. Total is 14 1/2 pounds.

I hope i can keep the front tire on the ground !

I think that most of the rotors will definitely be over 1.5, or closer to 2 . I got the weight marked on my sprocket (pic above) so it will weigh around that finished.
Really curious.a out what new tires weigh, the 5 inch wide 17@ 5 lbs seems light, is it a street tire ?

754, I stand corrected. The 5 lbs weight was for the front tire. I rounded it up to 6 lbs because the scale reads 5.5. The AVON 200/55/R18 Weighs in at 14.8 lbs, say 15 lbs.

LOL yea a 5 lb huge rear tire wouldn't last 1 burnout huh ?
