Tach Plug/Tach Cap
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:18:13 PM »
When using a tach plug do you need the tach cap?  I have a 650 cam in a 550 motor and won't be running a tach so I was going to use a Cycle-X tach plug but not sure if I need to replace the broken tach cap as well.

Ya my bad, tough to answer a question when terms are vague.  It's the piece that holds the tach gear in.  Part #19 in this fiche.  I'm pretty sure I need it, mines broke so I ordered one up( OEM found on ebay) just in case since part is discontinued and I haven't seen 'em used.

Thanks Steve-O the plug isn't the hard part to source, Cycle X has them too.  The tach cap is the stock piece screwed into the cylider head that holds the tach gear in.  Right now I just have a hole into the cyl/head and I think it's too large for the tach plug ie the diameter of the hole in the cap fit the the plug but the hole in the cyl/head would be too large.  I've got it sorted either way but thanks for the reply to a random question.

I broke TWO tach cap housings on my 500f. I ran a temporary plug without the housing made out of a metal furniture chair leg plug and an o-ring. It held up for the couple of weeks I needed it to. There was a post on here that listed a Honda XR speedometer plug (I think) that worked well for a tach plug too.

its the easiest thing to make:

what i did to ensure that the cover presses uniformly, as its only secured from one end, is to file a brass washer at a slight angle, nip the one side off, and put the thicker side facing away from the cover, so as you tighten, it pushes the farthest side down first and then levels out once tight. i used some 1.5mm rubber gasket material we sue at work for milling and lathe coolant sumps...

excuse my dirty fingers, i work all day long with my hands ;D
