14.39V @ 1200rpm is a modern miracle on these bikes!

I know from the work Paulages did on his hybrid 550/650 bike the clutch side has a different taper and size and it would stand to reason the rotor and stator are going to have similar differences on the opposite side of the crank...

Great news on that sweet looking charging voltage at idle. Lots of possibilities for accessories and heated gear with a higher output available.

What regulates the output? Wouldn't that overcharge the battery?

Here's something similar including a regulator that is also plainly shown with the last one...
Who knows maybe it could be adapted?

Uh...the regulator?

The stock alt puts out more than 12v, but at higher RPM, and still not as much. The regulator chops it down.

A modern regulator. 3 wires in....2 wires out (to the + and - battery terminals).

That is a Harley part, would not be compatible. The rotor looks pretty lightly built.

Harley parts or not... the idea is the same... lose the battery energized field coil, and get a Permanent Magnet rotor, and a stator that will fit, or make it fit.

There are several designs of regulators for 3 phase PM Alternators. Some more efficient, and effective than others. Still researching it. The wind power guys use em' too to charge their batteries...

Just rode home from NH this evening after picking up my CB750K4 that had been left with Anders for the alternator upgrade. Bike started up easily, headlight seemed to be superbright even at idle (no dimming) but maybe that was just because it was 9pm and dark! Rode the 74 miles home at a good pace and the bike felt smooth and very responsive -this would be due to the newly cleaned carbs no doubt

Anyway looking forward to the Fall when I can run heated gloves and heated jacket and not have to worry about running out of juice. Photos of the setup to follow...

Makes me wonder. If this ever gets going for the 500, then I could possible be riding all year long in the cold Michigan weather. People might think I'm crazy, but they won't know how warm and comfy I'd be behind all that heated gear.

I ride mine all winter long. Of, course a heated outfit might make it better.

I know Anders has put a couple of thousand of miles on his K8 already running to North Carolina (Tail of the Dragon) and back to New Hampshire. I have a 500+ miles on mine (CB750K4) and so far couldnt be happier but...waiting for the Fall weather when this upgrade will really pay off.

Heated gear on a CB750 mmmm cant wait! I have rode the last few years on the VStrom and having a heated jacket and gloves is great when its 20F out. Now this will be possible with the CB750!

What we are seeing is the evolution of a bike that was groundbreaking. Now bright skilled people are taking this bike where it would have gone given time, or be, if built today.
More people will figure out how to incorporate more modern technology into these bikes without radically changing their charm, just their function.

I can tell you I am very interested. My alternator is toast from sitting in a field for14 years so I need to replace the whole thing. I would much rather replace it with this!

The cost will be round $600.00 plus shipping if there is enough interest. I designed the 750 kit because I wanted one for myself. I don't own any 550 .

I'm very interested. Just make sure you call it a 500/550 kit, otherwise you might miss an interested party. I do believe the 500 and the 550 share the same alternator. Don't know about the 650.

If you need a tester for it let me know!
