FFJMOORE CB750 Freaking cracked case
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:02:31 PM »
Well, i picked up a 76 CB750 today. It was cheap enough that i can get my money back if i have to part it out. It has DMV fees of almost $600. Im going to try and get them to remove them. The plan for this one like every other bike is to get it running well and then sell it. Hopefully i dont get attached. While I was there the guy mentioned that he had a British bike too. I looked and it was an AJS he said from 54. It was taken apart and stored in suitcases. He said he had everything but the frame and swing arm. I didnt see wheels either. I would like to have that but i dont have the money right now and im not really sure what thats is worth. Anyway, just thought i would start another build thread to keep track of progress and what i do to the bike. I tend to forget what i did when with all the projects i have going on.  :o

HEre she is. Wrong front end on the bike but he gave me the stock front end as well. said the fork was leaking so he swapped it out. Tank is in good shape, fluids need to be changed and carbs cleaned. Said they got it to fire up but would not idle.

Came with a few boxes of spare parts to the 750 and some 550 stuff.

Well I was going to try and register and get the bike running today, but when i got it home with the bike i noticed a lot of oil on the left side. I confirmed my suspicions, it had previously had a cracked case and now has a #$%*ty repair.
Judging by the oil on the bottom of the motor im going to guess it still leaks. SO...Its going to get parted out. Not worth fixing.

How much for the forks?

Might want to have this moved to the For Sale section...I think I saw this one on CL, right?

OR, I have an engine you could buy...

I'm really amazed at how often people find their cases to be cracked. Makes me so glad that mine are OK.

I'm sorry it happened to you but you should be able to make your money back and then some by parting it out.

Once you have that crank case clean its a pretty easy fix mate....

If You can't fix it with a hammer, You've got an electrical problem.

If you don't have the skill or the equipment to weld it that repair would add up REAL fast at shops around here.

Really depends what rates are like and who you know.

Looks like the cases were welded during some prior fix.  Also that red silicon visable in you pics would be a poor choice for a sealer in that situation.  That is a JB weld type job.  Also are you sure that is where the leak is coming from?  Not the chain oiler maybe?  Main shaft seal?  Might not be as bad as you think.  I would at least clean it up and see.  Could also affect how much you can get out of it if you sell.

the problem is the bike has $600 in back fees. If it was all in good condition I would find a frame and swap the stuff over. But with a bubble gum job repair, im not sure i want to spend my time on this one.
