Hi, everyone. I haven't posted anything in a while so I thought I would drop a quick update.....still no photos sorry guys.
There will be some soon. So my Carb rebuilding kits arrived from Honda and I'm getting ready to rebuild them as soon as I get the back. I dropped my Engine(and carbs) and other assorted bits of at the Vaporblaster. I'm very excited to see the end result. Before and after pictures as soon as it happens.

A Mate of mine spotted this one in Cape Town this morning. Pretty good job.

So I found some crappy photos on my phone to share.

Some engine mounts and pre-load adjusters from Kevin over at TTR, and some general Tank progress....As I have been discovering with this bike. The paint serves only to hide the rust.

So I got all my bits back from the vapor blaster!
 Sweet baby Jesus. I have nothing to say except that Bernard did a great job and it was worth every penny.

Here's some before and after montages to get you and me through those long cold nights. We've all seen the results before but this is my engine and my results.

I'm a happy camper.

I had my Tank blasted while I was at it.

I'm almost 100% sure that I am going for a bare metal paint combo on the tank and the tail of this project. The blasting also revealed the leaks that I noticed when I bought the bike originally so those will have to get patched up. I think I'll get it sealed from the inside.

Also I have been playing around with some more mock ups. I like the idea of a removable wasp tail. That way I can have Racer look and still take the GF out for rides too. I picked up some contact details for a good fabricator in town so hopefully he can do a great job of it and I can hang around and learn a bit too.

I'm also going to be stripping the chrome of my forks as they are in terrible condition....is there any reason not to Cadmium plate them with the other bits I'm getting replated?

Carb rebuild.

So here's my carbs.

I've started rebuilding them, the spare set I bought 2 months ago are really coming in handy in terms of referencing and replacing parts on my carbs. The jets and needles are n much better condition in the spare set.

Once the carbs are done I'm ordering new bearings and rings and then I'll move on to reassembling the engine.

Just one question, The retainer spring that goes on top of the main jet is suppose to give resistance when fastening the float-bowl?

Exciting times.

Hi Straat,
The vapour blasting has brought your parts back nicely. As far as removing the chrome off your forks & replacing with cadmium plating.....sorry that's not going to work. The cadmium plating is way too soft & too thin. Hard chroming is the only way to go or you may find it cheaper to buy a complete new set. DSS or CMSNL have repro items at reasonable prices.

Dude, fascinating build and I can strongly recommend Kevin at TTR400, not only a top chap, but amazing gear too. I was lucky enough to put his rearsets on my custom 400F project.

I've been through a fair bit with my bike so if you need any resources let me know, mines a big more 1 off but I'm sure there are bits in there that could help www.http://idiotsguidetocustom400f.blogspot.com.au.

Think I might win the who's got the crappiest 400 to start with comp though.

I have ordered parts from Kevin before and I will again. I'm looking at side covers and Rear sets if I can afford them right now.  At least your 400 isn't being held together by rust Neevo. Ha ha. I've actually checked your blog out before. That's some crazy mono shock action you've got going on there man.

Damn Disco, here I was getting use to the idea of Yellow forks. Any other way to get that effect short of anodising or some such procedure.

Hey Straat-toe, when can I come and see?!  ;)

If I may ask, what did the vapour blasting exercise set you back, and can you post contact details?

As for the forks, it is possible to hard-chrome (which is not the same as normal chrome plating). Bruce (Bru-Tom) just had his done (Eastern Cape though) - maybe get hold of him for details.

If you want to re-chrome other parts, best place in Cape Town is Lusinco Electroplating Montague gardens.

PS: All-Seal in Maitland is great for sourcing carb seals and o-rings without buying those ridiculously expensive carb kits (but you may have to phone around for some of the smaller o-rings).

Yuuup. Dragging her kicking and screaming back to life.

 I ordered myself some rear-sets and Carbon/Kevlar side covers from Kevin at TTR. I just heard back from The Nut and Bolt place. All new Stainless steel bolts for the engine is done and ready for collection.

I think I'm going to focus on getting a rolling frame before I put the engine back together. Does the newer 400f and Bandit swing arms fir on the old 75 frame? Anyone?

And I'm going to start hunting for some wheels. Not looking forward to ordering new spokes and rims....it's a nice thought but the money would be better spent somewhere else.

And I shall be restoring the Petcock over the weekend, and start working on cleaning and sorting out my controls and reservoir. I want to try and keep all of that original.

 mail Theo:<theov@hondadealer.co.za>  They took a few weeks, as they were waiting for one jet to arrive. Buuut ypu also do need to chase them constantly to get feedback.

Anybody here need Jets? Screw-in as per the CB750 or push in as per the 400F or GoldWing? Let me know - I have a #$%*house full and they won't cost you R60-00 a piece - and the postage from Durban will be cheaper than from the UK or wherever.

Hi all.

Well I did it. I bought another Honda CB. This time a 73 550K even though they only came out in 74. The papers and Vin says 73. This one runs, the chrome is still in Great shape. It just needs a bit of attention. New front wheel the brakes to be serviced, some electronic bugs and a missing side cover and the fork gators....and off course the paint job.

This ones staying stock. I really got it because I can't wait for my 400 to be up and running......And I'll be damned if I pass up a opportunity to own a 550.

God-dammit. ha ha.

Are you going to respray in original colours? My B.I.L. has the same tank + side covers, and I'm going to spray it for him... maybe flake orange.

Does anyone know if any parts (like the swing arm, Stator Motor, Gear shift Stopper) of the later model Honda 400 Super Fours are backwards compatible with the CB400F

400 Super Fours as in the 2000-ish year model Fours with a twin-camshaft engine? Or SuperSport as in 1976/7 CB400F?
