Topic: Check out the carbon headlight I made for my CB750

I made the tach mount guage bracket out of carbon as well but the image doesn't show it that well.  I think it gives the bike a performance look.  What do you guys think?  It took me some time but I am happy with the result.

I only made one of them but I could make more as I did a mold for it.  It is 100% prepreg expoxy carbon fiber cured in an autoclave.  Tach mount cost me about $69 in time and material and the headlight bucked cost me about $119 in time and material.  I'm sure it could be done with less cost, but saving $20 on material always costs me my time squared.

I picked up a 73 CB750 and plan on making some bolt on carbon stuff.  Rear fender, some cafe stuff, motor mounts, clutch cover, points cover, starter cover, and chain guard are on my list.  I keep adding to my list as I get ideas.  The front fender is done and I did a cafe fender that is smaller and provides a different look.  Chainguard is done, headlight bucket is done, tach bracket is done.  I would really like to tackle a gas tank.  I know I can do it, but the cost of making the proper mold is expensive. I will have to save up for that project.  I'm not interested in doing it half cocked and 1,2,5 (skip step 3 and 4) jobs are not going to have my name associated with it.  If I am going to do it I'm doing do it correct.  I'm am running wide open as there is snow here in Ohio and I want to have this bad boy ready come riding weather.

Awesome, I've been contemplating on making these parks myself out of carbon fiber, but I doubt that it would turn out anything like your work.  As long as you keep making them I'll sure buy them if the price is right.

In the context of sohc's I really detest the stuff, it's just the wrong fit, creates a material mish-mash that doest work on 70's stuff (for me, for me). Am I all alone in not going gaga about carbonized sohc's?  Take into account that i am a bit of a purist. Even "billet" stuff and 17" rims have no place on sohc's IMHO.

Even if you were to make exact copy of original parts such as fenders or chain guards made out of carbon fiber, you don't have to have the carbon fiber finish.  It's paint-able just like fiberglass.  The carbon fiber is just merely a way to drop weight without sacrificing the wholeness of the bike.  I agree that the carbon fiber appearance should be used sparingly on these bikes.

I see what you are saying TG, I am building a K2 as a modern version of what i would like a 750 to be, so i can see carbon parts as part of that, not much of my build will be stock but it will still embrace the style of the original, not to mention the weight savings with carbon fenders, gauge mounts, chain guard and other bits and pieces. I also agree with your comment about 17 wheels, i will be using wider spoked wheels in 18 inch, front and rear....  Is it possible to have carbon fenders that are paintable ? I know a lot of people will think that goes against the carbon look, but as i said, i want the fenders for weight reduction, not for the  look...?  A carbon airbox would be awesome....

After doing a 'mostly' purist restoration (not the engine  ) and buying as many new and NOS parts as I could find from 9 different countries, NO, I would not use carbon on this bike.

HOWEVER after having replaced 85%+ of the aging useable parts with said new/NOS AND after acquiring another titled frame I will now have somewhere to use those aging useable parts and definitely hope to build a custom used take-off parts bike and add some of this carbon fiber to the new build. That is once F parts are built. So I can appreciate where TG is coming from.

I'm more interested in weight savings than looks. I don't think the CF point cover could be much lighter than the stock part, but would probably be stronger, giving more protection if the bike went down on the right side? A clutch cover could possibly be a much greater weight saver; I've never weighed one. I know a cam cover is fairly heavy, and a shifter cover is about 590 grams...

I think if your doing a good or better (Not a perfect restoration) then I don't think there is place for it
BUT
If your doing something like my Turbo build where the only thing left stock is the swing arm and frame
then I think as much carbon as my check book can take

It has its place but you just have to decide where it goes and the type of  build your after

I like the original stuff as well don't get me wrong.  The carbon can be painted or wrapped.  Carbon is almost impossible to dent, pit, rust where the OEM is easy to dent, pit, rust...  I did a fender for a guy last week who got it wrapped in chrome.  It looked awesome.  Never thought I would see carbon get wrapped in chrome but he wanted the OEM look.  Headlight bucket mold is done.  PM me if you want one.  I guess what I am saying is it all depends on what you want to do.  Thanks for the feedback.  The more excited you guys get the more energy it gives me.  And now a days the energy is hard to find.

That CF motor mount is very cool.  Do you think it will crack though?  I've wondered about the aluminum ones and always backed away wondering if there might actually be some load on that thing.
