Is low oil pressure the source of my unhapiness??
« on: February 25, 2013, 12:58:33 PM »
Hi chaps,

I've posted before about continuing problems I've had with with my 400/4.

Basically, when warm the clutch grabs pretty badly (practically like a switch) and the primary shaft gear to clutch basket whines like a an old car going backwards.

Lots of great suggestions from you guys, i tried different oils, carefully sanding the clutch steel plates, a complete secondhand clutch assembly, new clutch lifter thingy, new cables, very carefully filing the slight notches in the basket, all with no success.

I recently found a thread describing the cb750's issue with clutch oiling and that people drill extra holes in the the clutch hub center. The 400/4 doesn't have these holes, and on further searching, people have stated to not have issues with 400/4 clutch oiling.

So i started thinking that maybe i have an issue with low oil pressure. When my bike is just started and run for maybe 5-10 mins in cold weather, it works well. Engine warms up, oil thins, and in theory this could cause a pressure drop. Studying the service manual, the feed for the clutch is fairly direct, pump>main shaft>clutch followed by i suppose splash on to the clutch basket gear.

now is probably a good time to tell you i don't have an oil pressure light on my bike.. so i definitely need to fix that. I'm going to use my neutral light as a temporary measure, will be hooking it up this weekend.

I had the bottom half apart a year ago to fix a seized cam tensioner, so i plastigauged the crank and rods, first four pistons within assembly spec, furthest from pump within service limits.

So just really want to get some advice on if i could be on the right track here? the oil light will hopefully give me an idea if i have a problem, but that really describes the whole system not the clutch feed. Does anyone know about the oil feed to the clutch? service manual doesn't explain much, and i cant really understand how the oil gets in the clutch and out etc.

If i do have a problem my first thoughts would be to check the clearances on the oil pump although i cannot find specs anywhere, and of course to replace all the oil pump o-rings.

Many thanks for any advice you can offer
