1979 Honda CB650 Cafe Project or Parts Dilemma
« on: February 26, 2013, 01:17:11 pm »
Over this past Summer, I have been parting out three different CB650's here on this forum... a 1980 CB650C Custom, a CB500/CB650 Hybrid (72 CB500 frame, 81 CB650 engine), and a 1982 CB650 standard. During that time, I have learned quite a bit about these bikes and am becoming quite familiar with the CB650 in general. I have also learned that they share a lot of common parts with other Honda models of that era, such as an 82 CB750 that I bought, repaired, and sold; and a CB450 Nighthawk that I'm parting out (although maybe not as much in common with the CB450). Honda (and I guess all the Japanese manufacturers) were pretty sneaky with building bikes in the 70's and 80's with off-the-shelf parts.

So today, I bought a 1979 Honda CB650 'Project' bike. Despite it having a title and that I am told it runs, I bought it with the intent of parting it out. It was pretty much came disassembled with lots of spares. Three seats, a couple tanks, real COMSTAR wheels, and a storage tub full of spares. When loading all of these parts up, I was coming across parts (such as the fuel tank) that did not look like CB650 stuff to me, but rather DOHC CB750 parts. When I got it home, I pieced it back together to see what I had. What I thought was a CB750 tank, I'm now thinking is probably the stock tank (it matches the side covers, the key fits the lock, etc). The more I mess with this bike, the more differences that I'm seeing from the other CB650 bikes that I've been dealing with. I knew that the 79 supposedly has a hotter cam, but it appears that the frame is different, the tank is different, the sidecovers are different. It's almost like a different bike entirely, and 'Feels' like a bigger bike than the later model CB650's.

...and now that I look at the bike sort-kinda reassembled, I'm questioning of I really want to part this bike out or put it back on the road.

Is that the stock tank for a 79?

Yes, that is a stock tank for a 79. The tank, frame, seat, gauges, etc are different than the other 3 years. The engine is the same as the 80, same carbs and head. The 81 and 82 also had the same engine, but different head and carbs. The cams are the same for all 4 years, unless you got the German model which had lower horse power.

So a seat from this 79, will not fit following years?

Put that thing on the road!  If any of the 650's you've had "deserve" to be on the road, it's probably that one.  First year bike, decent stock paint (let the brandywine sides grow on you :) ) and you're already familar with the model?  Sounds like a winning combination to me.

Whenever I part one of these out, that's usually the first thing to go. I usually get an email every other week or so from someone looking for a 650 cam. ;)

Nah, I don't NEED a 79 seat. I already have three of them! Hehe... they all came with this bike when I bought it. A previous owner has altered the subframe on this bike slightly, so I can't confirm with 100% certainty that they are 79-model seats, but that's what I am told.

King/Queen style:

...and two stock seats (or at least what appears to be):

Can these all be identified as 79-model seats from the base?

They have latches, so they are either '79 cb650, or some other model. The later 650 seats did not have a latch or hinges, they bolted on.

I've had 2 CB650's one a 79 Z model and a 82 C model, both had twin leading disc brakes, that one of yours does not?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Correct. This one has a single. Appears to be stock, but I can't say with 100% certainty.

I'm pretty sure that the US SOHC 650's never came with twin front disks. The '82 would have been a DOHC model, so it may have.

My 82 CB650 parts bike is a SOHC. It has/had a single front disk as well.

I think we (in the US) often get left out on some of the higher-performance versions of models offered to other areas of the world.

The US standard models from'81 & '82, as well as all US '79 & '80 had single disc front brakes. The US '81 custom and '82 nighthawk came with dual disc front brakes. The '82 was a SOHC , '83 was the first year of DOHC.
