should be up an running by the weekend and then get it to the dyno
Jim
Did your friend come over and check the timing and valve to piston clearances?
I learned it the hard way with similar parts and bent 7 intake valves... yes, you are absolutely right,  I didn't measure everything and learned from my expensive experience  ;)

got the cams timed but did not check clearances..............
we did retard the intake to almost 80 degrees, very very slowly turning the motor over and bumped the piston.
so we knew that putting the timing (Advancing) back to 112 degrees, the valves are no where near hitting
To be honest we forgot to do a clearance check.
just waiting on the carbs and mag side gasket to come in.

will keep you posted

My son will start working on his engine as soon as the new valve stem seals arrive.
The head we are gonna put on his bike was ported by Mike 2005/06 winter, the first one he did for me  8)
I messed it up 2007 and it has been resting since.

Good to hear things are right Jim, looking forward to the dyno results!

its all together and ready other than the gasket that was suppose to be here today
should be here tomorrow and will get it cranked

Just your average um GS 11?? I guess the 36 flat slides give it away

If everything works as it should, your GS has entered the world of second gear powerwheelies  ;)

Don't know about big, I've ridden a few GSX-R's on the street and on the strip, never shared your experience though.

It was a 1988 gsxr1100j, last model slabbie with the carb mod done {something in the carb tops i think, was a common mod in the day}
Quick and light, with my lack of weight it could be quite a handful, until it was stolen... >:(

I have an 86 GSXR750 in pieces.....I'll probably get to it sometime around 2020.  ::) ;DHave 3 engines and a million parts. ;D I know on British ZX-11 imports they had , for lack of a better term, pegs cast into the carb tops. this would limit slide lift. I thought Australian stuff was all derestricted. ??? Anyway...the 1100's were pretty nice. They used small CV carbs which give them great midrange and throttle response.

Ahh,

I HAD an 87 GSXR1100 also. Yeap, i loved that old bike. Power wheelies?? For certain!!! Won quite a few races with that bike and enjoyed riding it on the street. My only regret is that i decided to take it to Daytona for bike week one year. Rode it around the first day and then parked in the parking garage that night with a chain around the wheel and a disc brake lock on the rotor. Got up the next morning intending to go for another ride, walked over to the spot i had parked the bike the day before, and there was nothing to be found. Dammmmmmmmmn!!
Needless to say that ruined my weeekend. I got a phone call about 2 years later from a storage yard in South Beach Miami. They had what was left of the bike but they also wanted $1000 in towing and storage fees for my bare frame. WTF!!!

Owned a few water cooled GSXR's after that but neither compared to the 87'.

They were derestricted Mike but there was a small mod you could do to the carbs that unleashed a bit more power, i fitted that bike like a glove and really loved it, its was so light with awesome "out of the corner" power, my mate with his ZX10 {1988 model} hated me.. ;D  I still have a slabby Frame and parts laying around, i would like another one.... 8)

Well the beast is back in the stable and what a beast it turned out to be

cranked up after a couple of turns of the motor and quickly settled down to a
slightly lumpy idle. checked for leaks (And there are none of coerce).

put some heat in to the new top end and was very surprised at how crisp the throttle response
was right out of the box.

Adjusted the mirrors, grabbed the helmet and went for a short ride just in the neighborhood
and once I thought things had seated in and nothing was starting to knock, rattle, vibrate, etc
I ventured out on some back roads and forgot all about the new build

This thing already pulled like a tractor when it was stock but thanks to Mike Rieck and Juha
its a tractor on steroids, and yes it will do power wheelies with my big rear end on it well in to 2nd gear

Just damn...............
Thanks again Mike and Juha

Need to get it to the dyno but brian is busy with bikes getting ready for Daytona so it will be a couple of
weeks

I need to put a fire under David to finish my Turbo build (Just about forgot about that one............NOT)
