Wheel rim spoke holes
« on: March 10, 2013, 03:26:05 PM »
I recently bought the pattern wheel rims from David Silver, stamped Union Cycle, the front rim holes are very small, some of the nipples just go in but do not seat others are too tight for the nipple to go in. Should I just drill them out or try and get a replacement rim.

I would buy a new set of spokes to match and ask DSS to supply them to match the rim they sell.... I have bought their spokes - front set - and they were perfect for my stock front wheel. Maybe their rim is C - rap? Converse by email with the salesman at DSS - I have done so in the past to resolve minor issues and found them very obliging.

Is the problem the same for both front and rear rims?

An update on this. After first saying they had not had this problem before, they then said it had happened once on one of their project bikes and asked me to ream out the holes to a larger size, approx .4mm. I am still trying to get them to replace the rim, they show 9 in stock.

Rear rims are okay, clearance to allow the nipple to drop in and spoke to align itself.

If it's a chrome rim, reaming the holes will mean rust in the near future.
If it's stainless or alloy, go ahead
Personally, replacement would be best bet as it could have other faults you won't see until truing

Yes they are chrome, rust was my concern, drill/ream has been suggested twice now.
