Well Ive been spending a lot of time over here reading so I figured I'd go ahead and post up what Ive got going on at the moment Most of this will be copy past from DTT until I make a little more progress.

For the sum of $1000 i picked up someone's unfinished project. THe guy had dropped 3500 into it in new parts and powder before it came my way. Needless to say I was pleased with my purchase.

Heres the new parts all laid out, all new everything


First thing I did was build a bike table as I was tired of working on the floor


Skip over a bunch of cleaning and I soda blasted and painted the engine parts.
Ceramic high heat engine paint and hardener from Eastwood.
Tossed it into the spray gun and went to town on some parts




It goes on nicely. And I HIGHLY recommend it.

Next up Got the rotor drilled.

Printed off a template.
Cut it out, put a veeeeery light coat of spray glue on it and stuck it on the rotor.
Went through with a center punch and punched each hole in (near :) ) the center.


Got a 1/4 inch cobalt tipped drill bit


Set the drill press to 250 Rpms and added a drop of oil and away we went!

About 45 minutes later she looked like this


I then hit it with some 800 grit sandpaper on a pneumatic orbital to take all the little burrs out.

And then got it reinstalled on the bike.
Huge visual improvement, a good bit lighter, and should really help wet performance and cooling. I'm a happy camper. Overall cost: $5.46 and an hour and a half of my time.

Picked this up (favorite purchase every I'dd have to say, paid for it self in 30 minutes)
The reason I'm wondering:





I am in love already.
A good blasting, a good cleaning, 2 minutes of spraying, and 25 minutes in the oven and I have beautiful powdered carb parts.

Up next is the cases

I call my first foray into powder a great success! Much easier than paint and if you screw up you just wipe it off before baking it and do it again its awesome.

After months if toil this engine is finally assembled for the first time in my hands!

Buying an engine disassembled sucks, especially when you have never so much as changed the oil on a 4 cylinder before. So hopefully I didn't ignore any parts haha.

She's a beauty

Had to go ahead and put it in the frame! I have to say, it is MUCH easier than a cb350 the engine slotted right into place




Of course I had to go ahead and partly assemble everything just to see how it looks




The seat: something about it just bugs me so ill be making my own, so anyone wanna take this one off my hands for a nominal fee?

Didnt like how the PO had the gauges mounted, they were too high and not tucked enough for me, so i fabbed up a new bracket to hold them right in close to the bars

and hit it with some powder

and it should be out of the oven in 20

I LOVE powdercoat, have I mentioned that? You can fab a part have it powdered and installed in under an hour. sure as hell beats the pants off of waiting on paint to dry!

I think its firing on 3 cyls at the moment but i dont give a #$%* it runs!

ANd added a rear hoop to the frame

Slowly getting things done..
got the hoop welded on tonight, sorry no cool pictures this time haha the bike was all covered up with blankets
but heres the hoop welded up


I wanted it short, I think i left just enough room for a skinny girl on the back  8)

And that is where she sits as of right now.
I need to get some sheet metal and make up a seat pan, need to figure out what im doing for tail light and blinkers, etc etc

I was shocked when I was able to pick it up, it had actually been on CL for over a month with no buyers, because the guys listed it as a "CB400Four4" so it didn't show up in any of the usual search results, i just happened to stumble over it.

wow, thats just sickening what an awesome deal you got there (in a good way ::)) Cant for the life of me figure out why the PO would have gotten so far and then sold the bike for so little - well done for picking this up!

Build looks good. Out of interest, what kind of space is that? Your workshop looks like an old barn or something...its monstrous, you could fit, like, sooo many bikes in that  8)

Beaveg I live and work in my shop it's an old factory. I'm a woodworker and its divided into 3 sections, one side for my wood shop
One side for bikes and trucks and storage of furniture

And the middle is my apartment

I think you have us all sold on the powdercoat machine! Would need a full sized oven for engine parts though.  Nice job great thread!
