Building the Dream...
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:04:50 am »
Instead of re posting a lot of pictures you can get up to speed here. (If you care to follow) Dreams are not everybody's Cup of Tea.  :)

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=119052.0

First I made a good friend today. His name is Corky and he was well pleased looking at my other Honda's. Had to fight him off the CBX to get the Dream unloaded.  ;D This will be a long friendship and a good person to add to my network. He already knows where there are parts.

Corky pulling up at 0800 hrs. from Jackson Hole Wyoming..

And in the trailer..

And now out..

Then we rolled "Casper" up on the rack.

And the original tool kit with feeler gauge! Unbelievable!

Next was the paperwok along with $1650.00 in cash delivered to my front door. I will be the second registered owner of this 48 year old motorcycle. Fourth owner total.

Check this title.  8)

I know several have these Dreams and will be more than happy to take advice, tips, parts leads and whatever information they can offer. I am giving myself one year on this. First, I will get it running. Second take a parts inventory and get the parts ordered during our warm months in Arizona. September for a frame off build with fresh paint, chrome, polished parts. As close as I can get it to original condition.

Now, if I can just locate a Service Manual I'll be golden.

To be continued....

Congrats tt, on the new friend and project. Looks like she is in better shape than originally shown. (Not that there isn't room for improvement, but she's pretty nice now.)

Very nice gentleman. Very. Yeah, this will clean nicely.

He already has my next bike purchase. First on the list because he knows now what I like to do to them. Has 3500 orginal miles.
Will not say the model but I want one bad. Real bad. Will see.

OK, back to topic...

I'll start into this tomorrow. Compression is strong when you use the kick pedal. I want to soak the cylinders for a week or so, get a battery for it. If I can find one.  :(  Everything offered is the wrong size.

I better get use to this. A long road ahead.  ;)

Congrats John, nice buy.  When you meet someone who is just as passionate about these old bikes, it's easy to be instant friends.
That old title is awesome, make a nice color copy of it before you surrender it, will make nice wall art in your shop
The lien was $533, any idea what these originally sold for? (he may have paid a cash down payment).

No idea what so ever. I might ask Ron next time I'm in Needles as he was a Honda dealer for years. I have to do a lot of research that's for sure.

I am going to need all the help I can get. Hoping folk's jump in here. The more I look at it I might just do the old polish on it and see what happens. I have no doubt that I will never lose money on it. Just to complete for a 48 year old motorcycle. The tires are Goodyears and look awesome.  8) Not even cracked and holding air.

I talked with my parts guy and of course I bought a rare model. It's a CA 78 model, late 1965. As you can see by these numbers.

Honda CA77 DREAM TOURING 305 USA

1964(I) Eng # CA77E-100001 ~ 108716 Frame # CA78-100001 ~ 108716 <----8715 total.

Engine CA77E- 1003973  Frame: CA78-10003974 <----mine.

I'm not sure of the difference at this time. I joined the 305 forum so I will be jumping over there for sure. Another adventure continues.

You know, I'll swing in there and ask them. Not going to title in my name until the bike is running.

I'll ride it over there since they have to check the numbers. None on the title that I can see.

What's really cool is the fenders and side covers are metal. There's some old school for ya.

Many years of the CA95 had metal fenders and side covers. Not sure if the plastic ones are repo or what...

The battery location on both the CA95 and CA77/CA78 were in bad spots if the drain tubes weren't maintained and the acid kept off the metal inside and outside the frame.

The Selenium Rectifiers can go bad and with the system being a 6V system ( think the CA 77 was as well) then they are a pain to deal with.
Luckily the old VWs used 6V electricals so you can get decent single and dual filament bulbs.

Entirely new ballgame on engine designs with these motors but luckily you can get many parts for them still.

Going to enjoy watching this one come together.
BTW, they never had real bright finish on the aluminum, even off the factory floor, so polishing them up won't be an overly time consuming job.
Petcocks on the tanks can be a pain but there are many variations of solutions in that area.

Good advice on the mild factory polish to the alloy.........all were 12v..........The frame and rear fender is all one..............Be sure to get the correct battery as they changed from early production..........lots of parts available.........I have a complete motor.........When its all ready to ride mark your calender..........We (6-bikes) did a ride around Lake Superior on 305 twins in 2006........We plan to repeat the trip in 2016......

Highly doubt they would let you keep it.  Title is always surrendered when transferring ownership.

Yeah, it takes a thin battery and yet to find one. I'm charging a test battery now. Already putting some paint cleaner on her.  ;D She is looking good.

I was looking at the trim and yes, it's not a high polish. I noticed the brake pedal is bent and it put a hole in the right cover plate.

Shopping for that part if you come across one OS. Appreciate any help on this one.

Any particular forum you suggest?

Yeah, in the past they took it. I'll see if I can make, or have made, a good copy of it.

I forgot to mention Corky might have some Bultco (sp) hard bags. 8)

Uh oh, tt is looking to pimp his ride already...this one has captured his wanderlust...

Should be able to find someone with an appropriate donor cover...the CA/CB77/78 family of owner are active on VJMC email group from time to time...
Yahoo forums seem to be favored by the smaller bike crowd as well as the early bike crowd.  Bill Silvers is active on VJMC and a couple of the Yahoo group forums.

If I recall correctly the central California clubs have a good number of early bikes amongst their members.

ebay seller mrssuperdeals (Rusty Riders LLC) might have one if you wish to risk it, they have a good reputation and I have done business with them a few times.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Battery-12N9-3A-Honda-CB72-CB77-CA72-CA77-CA-CB-305-/110847270978?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19cf032042

They poorly packed some filters with a very heavy item and replaced 4 of the filters due to damage caused by the heavier item. It was a no hassle replacement.

ebay seller ibuy.isell (Classic Cycle Parts) has a modest selection of items, another seller I have had good interactions with...
http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ipg=50&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_ssn=ibuy.isell&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313&_nkw=CA77&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Gems like this popup on ebay from time to time...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Honda-CL77-CL-77-CB77-CB-77-CA77-CA-77-Outstanding-Oil-Filter-Cover-Assembly-/390561815257?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5aef4c5ad9&vxp=mtr

Whether this was an old part or new part someone did a high polish job on, don't know, but it would be out of place on many CA77/CB77 bikes as a result...

honda305 on Yahoo Groups is the best talk show..........My CA77 motor is complete and will stay that way for a cart-project.  Ebay will have parts if no one else offers.  The Bill Silver CD offers a complete history by VIN as well as a parts-book - shop manual - owner's manual.  Regarding the left-side cover...........the case-covers are interchangeable with the CB/CL motors but watch for the size of the oil-filter access hole.......the small hole is for early motors ''59 - '62 and some '63.  The oil cover itself has no script on the earliest units, then HONDA only into '63. Made in Japan was added from late '63 onward. When you clean the oil-sling..........be sure to re-assemble in correct order regarding the hardened-steel washer. I had Bucco bags on my '64 CA77..........their probably still hanging in a garage in Milwaukee.

I have a black 1964 Dream 305 project, too.  In good time, it will be a real head-turner!  When my wife and I take out the CB650, we always have someone come up to tell us their "old Honda" story.  I'm sure the Dream will bring those out even more.  Good luck with your project!

Old Scrambler..got it. Thanks.

Greggo..better late than never.

Hondanut.. I just paid attention that it was signed off.  ;)

Cleaned on Casper this morning.

Hooked up a test battery and every builb in it is shot. Power to them is fine. Horn works, starter does not however the solenoid clicks. Might have to remove starter and see what's going on.

The oil looks good but maybe things are just a little gummed up from sitting over the years. A lot of years. Gas tank had a little fuel in it otherwise just spotless. Very nice condition. Fresh oil next.

So far I have to hunt down some rear spokes. One missing, three bent on the rear wheel. Front in very good condition.

Going to order a petcock kit, carburetor kit and cables today. Would like to get it running before ordering a hugh lot of parts.

I just got off the phone with Classic Honda Restoration. 40 minute call talking about these Dreams. Wonderful people.

During the conversation I asked about engine cover paint. Well, here it is.

http://marblesmotors.com/index.htm

Some of you might of already knew this and others not.  ;) I'm ordering the high temp engine cover paint. Was told it's a large can so don't let the price fool you.  :P
