That's a pretty decent looking fairing. In fact it's the first I've seen that I like.

Ha.  Thanks kghost.  I'll take that as a complement.

I actually feel the same way about most fairings.  The bike was designed to be naked and looks best that way.  I think faired bikes look more balanced with some hard saddlebags on the back.

I'm getting too old to cover much distance without a fairing.  I took one off the 550 and put one on the GL.

Looks period correct. Matches the vintage look and feel of the bike!

I like a naked GL, but I also think that the period Vetter and Bates bags/trunk that came on my bike really look good. I even like the king/queen seat. It's also practical as I can use the bike for grocery runs in nice weather.

That said, it's all a bit much for just tooling around town or commuting to work, which is why I went looking for another CB550 to build as my commuter bike.

The Don Vesco Rabid Transit fairings are very pretty and coveted by BMW motorcyclists. They fetch a high price as well.  They are said to improve fuel economy.
Welnamark has a pretty wing in the perfect yellow that complements the bike nicely.

The Rabid Transit would not get kicked out of my garage or off my bike...

Good eye David.  Thank you for the kind words.

It is a very nice fairing to be behind.  It provides good protection but not so much that you forget you're on a motorbike.  The air coming off it is very clean.

I am very content riding behind it all day long.

It would seem one of the reasons the BMW guys like them is it's similarity to the RS fairing on the R100 which in my opinion is the prettiest faired bike ever designed.  Some day I would like to have a 78 RS.

RAFster,
Why don't you ride over and have a look at it? Just going by the sparse description and lack of photos, my hunch is it's a scrap yard refugee. I'd ride down there myself if it sounded promising.

1st year is great score.
Sweet find and in the 6,00 range.
28,000 not much. that is just on the speedo. motor could be a different story.
I replaced the original motor out of mine for a 78 at 143,000 and just need to fix a low cylinder.
not sure of the fairing. It look's nice on there I would keep it on. Nice for on the road.
I scored mine and didn't even know it till I was writing down the serial # for the bill of sale.
He was advertising it as a 76 and didn't know what he had either. I said do you know what you have here he said no. I told him he had the 242nd Goldwing ever built. Well  I did know because I already gave him the money and winch I traded for it.
That is a 77 engine let me go check some #'s

Yes it is a 77 Engine.

Yes it is a 77 Engine.

Paul

here you go.

Wrong color and look's like 78-79 side emblems.
Not a stock seat.
Wrong speedo, It should read 150 on there. It just has the 150 mark. Used on the CB750's
Your petcock is left on.  ;D ;D
That's it for those pics.

I was really stoked ;D about finding this 1975 GL1000. Other than not being a naked Wing it's what I've been looking for. First year of the GW, it's in good shape, everything works, low miles The current owner(he's the 3rd owner) has had it 7 or 8 years and has took care of it. He thinks alot of the bike. Doesn't ride it much anymore and wants it to go to a good home. If I had to guess he has no idea and is totally clueless the motor is not the original and has been swapped out along with a few other things done by one of the PO's sometime during the bikes life. Moral of this story is always do your homework, because you never know what could have been changed on a old bike from the time it rolled of the assembly line in Japan and went you run across it almost 40 years later.
Ok this is what I and we know- By the frame vin#GL1E1008253 it is a 75 model with a build date of 4/75. By the engine vin#GL1E3000652 it's had a 77 motor threw in the frame sometime over the last 38 years. The side covers have emblems(later models GL1000) not decals like it should have. Paul thanks for pointing out non original speedo(only having the 150 mark not the 150 in numbers like the Wings are supposed to have. The current owner says he's put 7 to 8K on it since buying it 7 or 8 years ago. This is the only accurate mileage we have on the bike and the 77 motor, and will ever have. My gut feeling is that this old Wing is ok even though it's had a engine swap and a few other things changed. But still not knowing what the true miles is on a bike scares me a little, I mean it's anybodies guess. I mean low, high, or somewhere in between. Also has other things been changed out that is not of the 75 year that is harder to spot. I failed to check the carb #'s. I know the 75 engine came with #755A carbs, and the 77's came with #764A. This is something else I need to check out. Me myself and I wants to talk to the PO that did the motor swap, the different speedo, incorrect emblems and ask him a ton of questions. Was he just repairing a bike that the original motor had gone bad and could only fined a 77 model year replacement not another 1975. And the speedo, why did he replace it. Did it just stop working and he replaced it with a non GW speedo, or was he covering up the true mileage before selling it >:(
I've pulled back the hammer, but have not pulled the trigger, so the deal is still up in the air. I feel like there is almost to many unknown question about this bike and no way to ever get the answers to them of why certain things were done. But I'm going to talk the the owner and inform him about the changes to the bike and see what he can tell me if anything. Straddling the fench right now.

Understand your concerns but if  it comes down to value, the non original items normally would reduce it.
Would it bother you down the road knowing the motor is a 77? Prolly not if it's a good runner.
It is what it is, if it doesn't feel right, move on. There are others...

The original asking price was $2000. He said he could come down to $1500 only because he felt like I would give it a good home and take care of it like he did. If he couldn't get that for it than he would hold on to it. Of course all of this was before knowing of engine and speedo swap.
