Matching Combustion Chamber Volume When Adding Quench Band?
« on: April 02, 2013, 04:28:16 PM »
Tried to search for a while and I haven't found anything....

I bored my cylinders to 65mm, scribed the new diameter of the pistons to my head using the larger gasket and I just started to add a quench band by hand w/ the 'ol dremel.  Also, last time I rebuilt I deshrouded the valves and smoothed the chambers a little bit.  My question now is how can I make sure that the volumes of the chambers are all the same? And how important is it that they are all the same?  I matched them visually before and ran great last year..

Should the quench band be done by my machinist?

I haven't taken much material off yet and decided I would like some input from the experts before I go too far.... Thanks!

Get a sheet of plexiglass that is at least big enough to cover the chamber (mine covers all 4 at once). Drill a small hole (3/16") in it that is off to one side of the chamber when you lay it across a chamber to seal it closed. Use grease or Vaseline to make it seal, then, using a paint mixing syringe (WAY too big to take drugs with...), slowly fill a chamber with ATF (because it is red and easy to see) and count the CCs until it is full. Repeat for all 4 chambers. They should be within 0.2cc of each other for a 65mm bore. It is pretty easy to get them all much closer than that. Honda used 0.5cc variance for their production 'spec', but I have seen them as much as 1.2cc different on untouched engines in the K3 era!

Great, thanks Hondaman! I'll pick up some plexiglass when I'm close to finished and try that out!
