Leaking oil pump gasket?
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:44:55 PM »
My 1972 CB500 that has only recently been started and running again after several years of being dormant, is leaking from the region of the clutch adjuster cover.  Also, the oil light came on, but there is plenty of oil in the bike.

My first question is, what should I look at to rectify this issue?  I'm assuming because of the region of the motor where the oil looks to be coming from, its the oil pump.

Is there anything I should know about replacing the seals/gaskets?

Which gaskets should I order?  All three of the available gaskets?

There are 2 small and one large "O" ring between the oil pump and crancase plus there is one under the top cover that does not show on any 500/550 parts list but one from a Goldwing fits. Discussed many times with part numbers on this forum
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks.  I've also ordered a new oil pressure sensor.  When I installed the curren original one (I found it in teh box of parts that was the bike), I didn't use any teflon tape to seal it.  Figured I would just put a new one in down there while I was fooling in that area.

replaced the oil pressure sensor and the light went off on the dash.  i ordered new gskets for the pump, but i'm concerned the oil might be coming from the shift selector rod...

I first replaced the oil pressure sensor, and the light went out.  Today, I set out to change the five gaskets accociated with the oil pump. What a pain in ass! It took me three hours and a smashed thumb to get the three bolts out that hold the oil pump on the bike!  My impact driver took a hell of a beating and the bit I was using twisted pretty badly.  I had to replace the three bolts because the heads got beat up so badly.  I also wasn't able to open the cover on the I'll pump or undo the bolt over the pressure valve, so those gaskets couldn't be changed.  What a huge pain in the ass this little project proved to be.  My thumb hurts sooooooooooo damn bad still.  The quick ride around the block felt like a victory lap.  Hope this solved the oil leak and the bike is able to maintain oil pressure after it warms up.
