"How much rust is TOO MUCH"

Apologies for again posting on an often discussed topic.  Problem is though there are a lot of threads, they are archived with dead pics. 

I need a replacement rear rim.  This is what I finally found.  The outside cleaned up remarkably well, but not so nice under the rim strip once I cut off the old tire.  Here I've hit it with a wire brush, but plan to buy a wire wheel attachment for the drill and then spray some rust converting primer I bought at lowes before respoking.  What do you think?  From the threads I was reading people were salvaging some pretty rusty rims but there were no pics for reference.  None of the spoke holes look to have lost thickness but the entire inner surface of the rim had rusted..

The question is can you stop it to be worthy of reuse?  You have to relace the wheel why not worry about with a new rim?  If it is a casual rider and you will not keep in the stable for long, treat it with rust converter and paint.

Those wheels are more than salvageable. A good commercial blaster will clean them right up and a good coating powder and they would be new new, they would just show the pitting inside which isn't seen. If they are throwing those out send them to me.

Yeah, media blasting or a simple soak in white vinegar for a couple days will take most of that right off. I just did the vinegar soak to a bunch of my trim pieces. After 24 hours submerged and a good rinse with a stiff brush they came completely clean.

ha!man,,youve got no worries with those rims,,they are solid!,,id add some pics of some truely rusty rims i have but id hate to make you sick!

Do they make rim liners for motorcycle rims? They use them on bicycle rims.

Yes they make rim liners for MC rims. Look around the inner tube area of catalogs!!

Thanks!  Perfect, glad I could save it along with the $$.  Here it is laced and with the 110 rear tire that came in the mail today. 



Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd just ask here.  The axle spacer from the comstar wheel is leaving a gap with spoked wheel installed.  Will any spacers I find for a '69-76 work?  It was a 130 rear tire on there, any reason to think the PO might've messed with the swingarm somehow?  Last, can I get just some spacers without getting ripped again on ebay $40 for an axle rod?

Yea white vinegar or apple cider vinegar is awesome, phosphoric acid is pretty amazing as well for quicker results...
