What is the best CB750 replacement front brake assembly?
« on: July 28, 2006, 03:22:42 am »
I know a few members have replaced their front brake lever assembly and master cylinder with modern versions.  I need to replace the front caliper (stripped bleed screw!) and would like to replace the rest at the same time to get better braking.  Can those who are experienced with the swap let me know what is the best replacement parts and if there are any issues on the install?  I am running a 1977 CB750 F1 with single front disc - I have low clip-ons so bar space is tight.

paris- There is a nice write up by Ben Hiles on the dual caliper set up in the FAQ, just do a search for it.  It has pics and everything.  I'm currently working on this mod as well.  You will have to obtain a second caliper and also the mounting bracket for the second caliper, along with an additional rotor and mounting hardware.  I would suggest new stainless steel brake lines for an improvement, HELUSA will custom make the lines to your desired lenghts.  I am going to use a master cylinder from an RC51, some people use master cylinders from late 70's Goldwings as they match the bike better (if you care).  I would stick with a Honda MC, as then the banjo bolts are the same regardless of what you use.

I think the only major issues, other than the usual ones with making sure your calipers and master cylinder are working properly and the lines properly bled, seem to be just getting the proper alignment for the second caliper (read the write up).

If you need a replacement caliper or second caliper for the upgrade, I actually have one for an F1 that I don't need.  Its in good shape, IM me if you want it.

Hevykerky40 - thanks for the feedback - I am not going for the double disc setup yet (next season maybe!) but will take your advice and find a modern Honda master cylinder setup and use stainless steel line.  I sent you a message regarding the F1 caliper...

paris-  Just a side note, you can get a repair kit for a stripped bleeder screw.  I came across one when looking for a replacement bleeder screw for my cb450k3.  It is two parts, an oversize new seat that screws into the stripped hole, and a new bleed screw to fit it.  I saw this at NAPA, but any car parts store should have them.  Not trying to eleminiate your excuse to upgrade the brakes, though! ;D

Can anyone advise if the universal brake assembly for sale below would be a good replacement for the stock CB750 F1 system?  I am looking for a modern assembly that will really improve the front braking as I currently have lots of power but not much stopping ability!

I don't see the spec for handlebar diameter, you need a M/C for 7/8".

Gabus - does the 82 900C front caliper fit the CB750 single front disc?

There really aren't any non stock calipers that are a direct bolt on for the SOHC Ks and F0/F1s.  The CB900 caliper is mounted behind the fork leg, and is designed for rotors that are thinner and a smaller diameter than the 750s.
