cb550 oil leak at shifter pedal
« on: May 26, 2013, 01:16:24 PM »
I just got this bike running , after a while I noticed a very small oil drip that looks like it's coming from behind the shifter pedal shaft. I suspect a seal but I don't see one on the Honda parts microfiche .

Any ideas ?  I hope it's something I can get to without removing the cover,

Thanks

I had the same thing on my 550.  The oil may appear to be dripping from there but it most likely is making a long drip route to finally fall there.  My leak was from the oil pump (there are 3 o rings if I remember correctly) and I just went in and replaced them all.  The other culprit could be the shifter seal but that seemed like a true pain to change and luckily my leak was not from there.  The other culprit could be the drain pan gasket seal.
If you want to trace it take of the oil cover and spray white foot powder (don't get the clear aerosol foot powder-make certain it is white) and after cleaning the area good give it a light spray (it will dry white) then ride your bike around a bit and  the leak will be evident as it will break through the white powder. then go in and change the seal that is leaking.
Hope this helps.  There are lots of how to's on the forum once you locate it.  But look at oil pump, shifter seal, and drain pan

Oil pump, main shaft, shifter shaft. If you're going in you might as well replace all of them.

Mine will drip sometimes after I lube the chain. The excess finds its way down the shifter shaft and onto the floor. Usually only a couple drips though.
