Looking for cb750 sandcast expert
« on: May 29, 2013, 09:55:03 AM »
I have come across a '69 museum quality bike and am just looking for someone to help confirm a few things for me and help answer a few questions. Of course I have checked out the cb750 sandcast forum but still have a few questions.

I can provide pictures etc through email.

Cheers!

Ask away...

After five posts, you can include pictures in your posts.  Way more action on here than the Sandcast Only site, and lots of sandy experts here as well.

I would do both.  There are many guys on the SOOC that don't hang out here.

I have registered for the sandcast only forum but my registration hasn't been accepted for a few days now. I am active on many other honda forums but never joined sohc4 for some reason. I currently have around 15 twins.

My questions mainly have been answered through research for specific VIN cut offs, but the speedo is something I still am unsure of although it seems quite obvious. The VIN is 44x

What are the key features of the speedo?

Thanks

I don't want to leave any of you guys hanging since I know the picture rules, so I need to get my post count up.

The other question I have besides the speedo is about the original exhausts. I have always known that the early ones should have no stamping on them and then later ones had a stamping such as hm300. I presume that there were no aftermarket ones made to this exact design/specs as the stock ones that could be unstamped "fakes"?

The only "story" is one that I haven't heard. The owner said there's an interesting story behind it but that will only be told to the buyer. It's not listed for sale anywhere so you wont find an ad or anything of that sort.

The color on that tac looks too good to be true, if it also has a museum quality price... I'd post a pile of better pictures and let the guys give it the once over!  ;)

This was someone else's advice in another similar situation: if the story doesn't have proof/provenance then the value of the bike is the same as a comparable bike without a story.

A lot of things check out as correct such as smooth oil lines, straight banjo bolt, short petcock, etc

Do the mirrors have an acorn nut on the back. Is it a three digit serial number like 4 hundred and something or 4 thousand ? One thing to always check out on these early bikes is to remove the countershaft sprocket cover and check the cases for chain damage if your up into the big bucks. Sounds like you have actually seen the bike in person then ? Look the vin over well on the neck also to see if the numbers 'look' right. Bikes looks pretty darn nice from some of the pics so far.

Looks real nice from here...........horn on left, all red foam in the seat, and smooth oil lines indicate a real low number.

Where would the acorn nut be? I haven't seen the bike yet but will be purchasing this weekend if everything checks out in person. As others have said, everything such as oil lines, seat base and foam, and horn check out. I just couldn't find much info on the speedo and wanted to make sure that that was original. It's also fully documented and this could be a part of the story.

I'll be going down to get it Saturday and will send some eye candy then. I will also find out the "story" then.

Might want to write down the VIN and engine number. Do a check to be sure it is not stolen...just be real careful before you exchange the cash. Is there a title in the sellers name? Again, just want to be sure everything is on the up and up before you exchange that kind of money. Good luck...she looks great.

Acorn nut is on the back of the mirror. It holds the mirror to the bar support bar. It is the standard mirror on the 69 & 70 CB750's.

Hew, be very careful. There have been scams where "sellers" post pictures of someone else's bike. At the least, take a friend when you go to look at the bike...
