So today I got the itch.... to tear down this 74 550 that I acquired recently, so that I can decide if I am going to re-use the frame for my project or get a new one.. 3900ish original miles. Original Utah title (slip of paper basically) that the DMV insisted was fake until I asked for a second supervisor.

Previous owner saw JUNK.. I see.. POTENTIAL!

An hour later... you can NEVER have enough PB Blaster. Never!

These seem way clean for having sat for so long.. will have to rebuild them anyhow.

Good lord.

This is what a huge nest of black widows and egg sacs looks like after I screamed like a little girl and dumped half a can of carb cleaner onto them.. the webbing in there was so strong/thick I had to pull it out with pliers.

Looks like original rubber..

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!

EXCEPT...

The rear upper motor mount would NOT budge on the left side. Wouldn't turn, soaked it in PB blaster, used a torch, used a little hammer, used a big hammer, used a Big F-in Mallet, It stripped out one craftsman socket and CRACKED the other(yes they were the correct size). So I ground the head off. NO BEANS. Had to drill that F-er out to get the motor free. It's almost like the spacer is GLUED to the motor I can NOT get it to move. EVERY parts fiche I have looked at shows that this part comes off and the rod should come out too.

Absolutely DOUSED it in PB-blaster and will go at it again in a couple days. GRRRR.

Havn't had a chance to try it yet but I've read that a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone is the best penetrating oil. You might give it a try.

The tear down looks good. The spider nest looks bad.

Been there before with autos, you need heat on there to get it out..acetylene torch..

Yep, I tried acetylene after the MAPP gas torch didn't do it. It was stuck as a mofo. No go.

This looks like its in good shape. Why would you want to use another frame? If you want to get rid of those tires let me know.

I haven't decided if I want to go with a hardtail chop or a brat/crazyorange style project yet. If I go with the former, the current frame with its seemingly stamped backbone will not do the trick.. and will cost as much as a new, totally custom to my specs frame from cycleonemanufacturing.

The tires are SHOT they are cracked and rotted out. Or do you mean the wheels? I won't be using them,,

My original thoughts for the mine was a bobber but I got to liking the cafe better after messing around on this site.

Tires looked good in the picture but oh well. I got some rims like those but thanks for the offer.

Even if they were, they are the original rubber the bike came with or close to it. One of the tires I identified as coming from '74, the front tire (like an avon speedmaster) is completely rotted out though.

Wow, your '74 looks a lot more complete than mine -- you got carbs, and they look good. Will be following to see what you decide to do with yours. Mine'll end up as a brat/rat/bob, someday.

nice looking bike to start off with. yeah, those dmv office workers could be pain in the butt to deal with. I normally go to AAA whenever possible. also, if you're not looking to use those stock pipes and side covers, I might be interested.

Lately I am of the opinion that Heat and WD40 are best, in that order. PB blaster for me anyways, has sucked.

I will second those carbs looks very rebuildable. Never know until you pull those bowls off though.. Are the chokes and slides moving?

that spacer is a separate piece. is there enough clearance in the "channel" that the bolt fits in to cut the bolt in half using a 4inch grinder?

Also this won't be updated all that often, I think, because I am very very broke right now and paying a few things off before I can save for a new frame or do much with this one. Gonna tear into the carbs this weekend though and I'll post some pics.

Did this today instead of getting some sleep like I should be ...

Plenty of dirt on the outside in the crevices due to the bike likely spending a portion of its life sitting outside. Otherwise, pretty clean!

Carbs 1 and 4 were pretty dang clean inside. EVERY o-ring and seal in these carbs was so old it was like they were made of plastic. I will purchase a rebuild kit from Dime City Cycles when I have the money. However, I noticed that the little T-fittings between 1/2 and 3/4 have O-rings on them as well, where do I get those??

Carbs 2/3 had this gunk inside it, smells JUST like fuel varnish. All four carbs also had some white corrosion looking stuff on the internals in the bowls. I assume I can soda blast it out, we will see.

After I clean out most of the varnish in bowls 2/3, I will put the carbs and their components into my sonic cleaner and see where that gets me. Might soda blast if necessary afterwards.

Also, I STILL have no gotten the upper rear motor mount bolt to even BUDGE. I have soaked it in PB blaster for over 24 hrs, tried heat, everything. The spacer that is still on the left side of the motor is still stuck as well. Going to have to take the torch and BFH to it tomorrow after it sits for another night with PB Blaster soaking on it. UGH. If I didn't know better, I would think someone welded that sucker in place.

I win. I heated it up, pressed a wax candle to the crevices, heated it up again, blasted it with PB Blaster while it was red hot, and hit it with an air chisel. Popped right out.

Nice work I would have figured I needed a new case after that much work, probably would have broke trying to get it out.

The neighbor came over to drink my PBR and comment that I was apparently emitting steams of angry gibberish curse words the like of which he's not heard before, and to scold me for having my motor sitting on a milk crate because I can't afford a lift. haha. Of course he was as expected no help at all when I needed another set of hand to hold the motor while I went to town. He was convinced that when I sprayed oil onto the red hot bolt that I would go up in flames. Pansy.

ha!that battery man?just wrap it in lunch sandwhich wrap and re fill it,soak that alternator rotor in mollases and water for a week,itll come out like its just been made!

I'll soak the rotor in vinegar for a couple days and then soda blast. Can I paint the rotor afterward to prevent flash rusting or will this somehow interfere with its function?
