electronic ignition

Isn't there a post out here about a member here that makes electronic ignition systems?

Yes, Pamco Pete. He is no longer on the site due to, well..Search his name, and you'll see the back and forth from a few members.

I have one in my 74 550. I noticed improved response, idle, and mpg, right away. I was able to put my 3ohm coils back on the bike also. (when I bought the bike, my battery went dead after each week of riding. Picked up 5ohm stock coils at the boneyard and problem stopped, but so did a little peformance.) When I installed the Pamco ignition, I put the 3ohm coils back on, and it came back to life. It now charges, (with the head light on) at all RPMs.

Don't remove the points yet if it's still running. It took a month for me to get the Pamco.
I'm starting to get used to waiting with no ride. I sent my swing arm out 6 weeks ago today! Still not back!

How does an electronic ignition cause coils to draw less current? Doesn't make sense.

There is less current going through the points, the points are just triggers, not switches.  Similar to switch and a relay combination.  That leads to very limited deterioration of points and their long(er) life.

Also means you have a backup ignition system in the off chance that the transistor ignition fails.

Rokusek, I spoke too soon! Pamco Pete is back on here. I went through my emails and found his address. pete@cbignition.com

If I remember correctly, I ordered it direct from him, and paid with paypal.

It can't for instantaneous current draw.  But then...
120 degree dwell instead of 195 degrees makes the very same coil draw less over time.

iron-worker,

There was a lot of debate on here about the charging system working better with a Pamco ignition (or any electronic ignition). I read through ALL of them, page after page after page. In the end I trusted Pete's claims more than the haters. In my case, Pete was right. When I put my AGM battery on the charger in Oct., it needed NONE. That was after two months of daily driving with the head light on. I laughed at myself when I thought about the first two months of putting it on the charger every night.

I don't understand it completely, but when I come across a great product at a fair price..I like to tell anyone who will listen.

You trying to start a war here?  I am sure someone will tell you how different electronic ignitions can control dwell in a different manner to control current draw.  You are probablly alway drawing x number of amps it's just the amount of time they are charging up.

Edit: did not see Two Tired comment on dwell.  He is the master on these sorts of things.

The other day, I was riding my XS650 with a Pamco ignition. I noticed my headlight getting dim, but thought it was the ancient bulb.
About 4 miles from home, the bike died. I kicked started it and as soon as I turned on the lights, it would run very poorly and start to die. I then realized I had been riding on the battery ALL day....about 65 miles. I turned off the lights and rode home (in the dark, no less....but I live in a rural area). Checked the battery and it only had 9 volts. The brushes had finally worn out on the charging system. The Pamco will work all the way down to 6 volts.
So, in this particular case, the Pamco got me home. It's a great product and Pete's customer service is second to none.

I would suggest that you replace the spark plug caps. They usually go open or very high resistance from the constant engine heat. Cut a small bit of wire off of the plug wire ends to ensure a good connection to the new caps. Caps are available at www.cb750supply.com

Have a Pamco as well. Install was smooth, fired up instantly !  Getting 50mpg, can sit for 2 months and still fire up instantly.

I can't wait, I've been working on this thing for a year and a half and now I got a buddy that's interested in buying it from me
