1st 100 on the 750
« on: August 03, 2006, 09:32:50 AM »
Well... after dealing with some wheel bounce and fork flex at 70mph (incrementally worse as speed increased... see my "Fork Flex" thread 'bout it)

...I ulitmately discoverd that the spoke weight that the PO had on the front wheel was not only twice too heavy, but on the wrong side! Without one of those nice wheel balancers it took a little while to figure that out though.

After my final fix... I could tell immediatly at even 30mph that it was running much smoother.
(And before I'd have sworn it was perfectly smooth up to 65) As I got on the F-way and started moving along with traffic through the long construction zones... I eagerly anticipated the end of the work zone as the 750 was running so smooth I felt like I was standing still. ... then ... clear smooth straight road ahead... 70 still smooth - 75 no bounce still - 80 no flex, shimmy, shake - 90 niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice .. (had it up to 90 before... but she felt like she was going to break up) This time... smoooooooth and solid.. oh what the hell ... TWIST... yeah... into the triple digits! Felt more solid than most cars I've been in at that speed.

I've been amazed that some of the most significant improvements on this bike for me so far have been the smallest things.

I'm almost anxious for the winter to come so that I can break it down for a full restore. naaaaa... I've gotten over 3000 miles in the last 10 weeks... I hope to get a few more few thou before winter... yeah... heh heh...

You're right. It wasn't until I had been riding for 27 years that I had a bike truly capable of the magic figure (a friend and I were touring in the 'prudent and cautious' speed limit days of Montana). Trouble is, when you sustain it you can see the gas being sucked out of the tank. Been there, done that, don't need to do it (much) again!

I grabbed the ton for the first time yesterday! I was cruising along at 70 and, since there was no other traffic in front of me, I decided I'd give it a try. Hell, it's only "that far" on the speedo! I rolled on the throttle, ducked down, and was at 105 in no time! Almost instantly let off and sat up to slow. Checked the mirrors - no flashing lights. Cooooool!!!  8) ;D

over the weekend, the speedo on my 400f read about 102.  sadly, the GPS i'd attached only read 91.9.  time to shave some weight and try again.

I've got no desire to ride that fast...HOWEVER...I heard what you said about wheel balance...I don't get much real vibration, but above 70, it just feels a little squirrely...I think I'm going to check it!

to quote the guy on "ridelikeapro.com" don't look at the ground unless that's where you want to go.
