Testing the Dyna S
« on: July 01, 2013, 12:13:14 PM »
I might have a dying Dyna S. Seems to misfire on 1-4 at high speed. Noticed there is speculation as to whether this is heat related, over voltage related, or both. Using 3 ohm coils , has a power relay installed for the ignition, but with no ballast resistor packs at the moment.  I know, dumb move.  But...   does anyone have, or can recommend an easy step by step procedure to weed out the problem, and point the finger at the dead/dying module??? Maybe just go back to points.
TIA!

Switch the 1-4 to 2-3 and if the problem follows the switch you have your culprit.

Yes, thought about that too. Along with just swapping the blue/yellow wires to Dyna module/the coils, I think physically moving the module to the other position is also necessary, since 1-4 would be firing where 2-3 should be...no???

Another question is...  how many module failures do we have so far...?

As Hondaman noted...  if you hook up a timing light, you can see it, and hear it. Seems to actually be 2-3 module. Erratic spark on both 2, and 3. Now it could be the coil, but I don't hear much about Dyna 3 ohm coil problems. It could be the plug wires, but if it was a plug wire the problem would only show with the timing light on that wire, not both wires, as in this case...  I'm betting on the 2-3 module.

Maybe if we round up enough dead/dying module owners, Dyna will have to respond with some kind of relief effort.
Any idea what they do if you are not the original purchaser???

Nice...

I just left them a tech support question to see if they will sell a module at reduced price. I'll post the reply, if I get one.

If this is a fairly NEW DYNA S, DYNA will replace it FREE. They seem to have had a run on BAD systems.. They have reconfigured the pickup plate with smaller trigger modules.. because of this problem.. Typical business practices, sell OLD stock before the NEW and IMPROVED is sent out..
I usually post more often on    http://hondachopper.com/     and MANY members there have had the same trouble with DYNA and NO questions asked they just replace it with a NEW one!!!

Well that's great news, but it probably will not apply here. The S was on the bike when I bought it a couple years back. Still, I think they should issue some kind of credit on a new module, or new system.

We'll see...  waiting for their response now.

Ok, got a reply from Dyna...

Even though warranted to the original owner only, they have offered a reduced price if I send it back to them for an exam, on a new system. They do not offer parts replacements.
I replied with a request to send it out full price, so I can install it with no "Down Time", and then they could refund their discount. Let's see how that flies...

Just now got the 2nd reply from Larry at Dyna. They only do this if you send them your system first. Company Policy. Points Plate Time!!! :)

The reason I said that they would REPLACE it, FREE.. I installed a NEW system in a CB750 and it died after about 5 mins of run time. BOTH pickup modules died so that must have been a 5 o'clock FRIDAY afternoon assembly. .. I re-installed the points and it fired right up and DYNA sent the owner a new assy.

There are some Australian members who have attended Dyna S Seminary; seek them out, if you can keep them from becoming English teachers, they will assure you it is your fault because Dyna S units never fail in Australia.

This will not help the fact that Dyna has quality issues, but it does provide a humorous diversion whilst Dyna is trying to hose you.

I went back to points, the K6 now has 10,000 additional miles on it, no problems.

I mentioned to Larry at Dyna I was going back to the high performance points plate while waiting for the replacement. He was not laughing with me.

Aaah and so the Dyna S forum pops up again. I know from personal miserable and expensive experience your Dyan is in fact dying because it is a piece of crap and can not handle the heat under the points plate! Do yourself a bigger favor and spare yourself a headache and go back to a nice new points set up. I did that 18 months ago, I did keep the Dyna colls, and my bike runs the like a fine Swiss watch.  Just my two cents..

It gets even better than that! After spending a few hours modding up the points plate to advance enough, I got it running. Then riding it, it would crap out and back fire at 5000 RPM. Did some checking, and guess what Dyna 3 ohm coil is SHORTED 63.5 K to the primary terminals. so don't save em',  toss em'!!!

So your Dyna S was not the original problem afterall?

Well...   we don't know that for certain, like the shorted coil, but considering the reliability of the S...  who knows???
I already sent in the system, so when they make a decision it will be interesting to know their next move. Then I will mention the coil short, and see how that goes over. This gets better all the time. I just would not have imagined a shorted coil, but I guess trying to depend on any of these products is pretty risky.

Not sure what you are trying to say here...  All that is, is an installation sheet. Doesn't do a thing for me. Please explain your point.

This is on hondamans site

"NOTE: On the alternator-challenged CB500/550 bikes, this Resistor Pack can allow the rider to use the Dyna 3 ohm coils with either stock points ignition or the Transistorized Ignition. It will not, however, reduce currents enough on this bike to allow for BOTH the Dyna S triggers and the Dyna 3-ohm coils: that is just too much load for the mid-sized Fours to carry. The CB500/550 rider may use EITHER the 3-ohm coils with this Resistor Pack, OR the Dyna S triggers with stock OEM coils: using both will cause electrical overloads and low battery charge problems, due to the smaller alternator output."

74750!! On the very last page there is a small section of T/S  you can do to find out if it is one of the TRIGGERS/pickups that has gone bad!!
I guess it's a mute point now since you have sent it to DYNA.
