« on: July 11, 2013, 05:46:49 PM »
Basket case/partial restoration/partial cafe

first off HUGE thanks to all the SOHC4 members who helped me with tech advice and great sellers!!!  Without you guys this bike would have been a part out at best...mostly scrap.

engine came from 77 CB550K
k70 dunlop tires
painted stock spokes
powder coat stock tank
SS front brake line
stock seat with custom upholstery job
exhaust (about to order carpy exhaust)
LED signals/brake/rear running light

more pics to come, these pretty much go in order from the day this back yard find came home and up until now

Pic updates coming soon

Got led signals and brake/running lights installed and blinking properly.

Also mounted air box

Went to order carpy exhaust and it had jumped up 40 bucks in price putting it out of budget so I settled for a black Mac 4-1:( bummer but now no worries riding two up

wiring finally completed and headlight bucket reassembled

ran into a little issue with the carb.  Body number two had massive corrosion in her to the point i had to repair both the body and the drain tube.  The body is repaired with JB weld (not the quick set stuff as it doesn't hold up to gasoline) but JB weld didn't seem to hold up well on the tube as the day after install she began leaking gas.

This time I pulled apart and re-cleaned, re-sanded and used Lab Metal to patch the drain tube.  Fingers crossed it works this time.  I'm planning on getting a new Carb #2 PDa body from another member here if she gives me any more problems but until I hear her fire up and run I don't want to pull the trigger yet.

I tried to start her yesterday, I got her to hit a time or to but not turn over.  I have no exhaust on her so I wan't trying to run her, just hear her fire a few times.

I installed my new points and condenser from 4into1 but i forgot my feeler gauges at work.  A standard business card is  about .010 so i put it at that just for the heck of it.  I also checked the timing but for some reason the whole T and F bit was too much for me to handle.  I will re read the FAQ and try again once i have feeler gauges in hand.

I found that we have two dwell meters and mercury meters for carb balancing/sync at the shop.  So hopefully i can get this diamond in the rough running perfect after so many years of neglect.

Fingers crossed my tank PC job and seat re-upholstery job will both be done in the next 2-3 days, both are already a week behind the ETA from the shops they are sitting at.

I'm also still waiting on the grommet for the brake stay to arrive, front inner tube, cover for AF box and the MAC 4 into 1 exhaust system.

My carb boots going from intake runners to carb are stiff as hell, really makes it a PITA to remove/re-install carbs, before i pull the trigger on some new ones has anyone ever taken a section of equal sized radiator hose and cut it down to size?

There are no markings on my boots to indicate direction or cylinder number.  When i was helping a buddy set up ITB's on a B18B1 a few years back we used stock hose cut down but we used always used Crome or Hondata back then to tune...making it a little easier to dial in than about 12 jets and a needle.

got a call from C&M powercoat that my tank was done.  Too bad my work schedule won't allow me to get by there until next week :(

front tire and exhaust came in.

I'm supposed to be getting a set of exhaust collar split joints from a local member soon so i can have the exhaust functional rather than just looking pretty for pics

Seat that was dropped off over 2 weeks ago SHOULD be ready friday or next week

updated pics

How did you paint your spokes? or rather what kind of paint did you go with? Or did you just powder coat them?  I need to take mine apart, clean the rust off and paint them as well.

painted with rustoleum semi gloss enamel.  I would rather have powdercoated but there was a good bit of rust on them so after blasting they were pitted pretty good.

Before i put $125 bucks in powdercoating i want to find some better used wire wheels or buy new outer rims and new laces and re-lace these myself.

The black spoke wheel and k70 wheels give a really nice retro look that i was going for.  I want her to look just slightly modified.  Right now i call it a true "naked" bike

the pics really do no justice for the color.  It's called shocker yellow and has an added metallic flake in the clear.  It changes colors from yellow to green to almost blue.  Really sticks out on an otherwise dark bike.  Seat should be done next week.

I'll have some racing stripes installed on the tank this Monday or tuesday.  I hope this engine runs well.  I can't test run as it sits because carb body 2 the fuel intake carb leaks like crazy and wont allow the other carbs to fill with enough fuel to properly run.

But i have another motor and the cylinders all spec at OEM bore, all pistons look good so if this motor is bad or smokes I have a good motor to put together to throw in it with new rings and gaskets...so all this time and money won't go to waste.

Mirrors, tank trim, split exhaust colllars and other finishing touches should also be in this coming week.  So fingers crossed next Saturday she will be running.  I'll be getting tags for her this week as well as adding insurance.  I have a clear title but have yet to put this old gal in my name.  I've only had her about 6 weeks and didn't think i would have gotten this far this fast.

Here are some teaser pics with tank sitting on frame,  The emblems wont be installed until tomorrow.  I didn't have any emblem glue at the house.

dropped my tank off to someone who does vinyl graphics (highschool/college age kid) since the guy i'd usually use to do my graphics has a machine down and can't print them out.

I gave him a few pics of some bikes, told him to be a little creative and let me know how it turns out.  I'm hoping he gets the edging on the outer stripes a little more even...but i like the idea

fingers crossed it turns out good.  You never know what you get when you use craigslist services but i figure a younger guy with a passion for something...give the kid a shot...where would I be now if someone hadn't given me a few chances.

Finally heard her start and run. Got my new used. Carb body in yesterday so I recleaned carbs just for good measure. Fired up and ran on choke.would rev on choke.  Warmed a few seconds and idled with no choke but would not take revs. Not bad for no air box and exhaust just set in place and not flanged in.

Tonight ill work on pics with new mirrors.

Still waiting on my seat.  I'm ready to ride!

Still no new pics. Having to find another place for racing stripes.  Picking up seat today! Got tank red koted. Exhaust split collars came in and using small fuel tank I was able to start and run for about 30 min to verify no smoking.  So far no leaks. Starter push button broke and had to install another one. Fingers crossed she will be fully assembled by this time next week.

I'm anxious to ride. Once together ill get her off my back porch and to the shop where I can set points with dwell and sync carbs.  From there ill determine if I need to work on rejetting. Mac 4-1 and stock air box.

She revs smoothly with bare carbs no choke and idles well.

19x2.5 and 18x4 IIRC, whatever the stock cb550 tire size is.  I went more for looks, gravel drive ability (i live at the end of a long gravel drive and when the lake floods so does my yard) rather than twisties.

the racing stripes will be installed this weekend

here are some mostly assembled pics.  I was able to ride her around the yard onto my dock and snap some pics

tank not hooked up yet.  i fill the carbs full of fuel then ride it, then repeat.

and the little lady doing her best to distract me from wrenching...i'm on fish removal detail

finally got her completed...she runs!!!  or at least she runs up and down the drive way.  I have to get tags on her next week and ride her up to my shop so i can sync the carbs and set points with the dwell.  I'll also probably have to tweak the timing.

as for jetting, i cleaned pilots and main jets with something close to welding cleaner wires.  They will take a little material out when you are cleaning something soft like these jets.  Then I set all the slide needles to the 3rd notch from the top.  With the mac4-1 she seems good on the A/F ratio but after syncing carbs and getting timing/points perfect i may need to adjust from there.

I'm not satisfied with the seat but it works for now.

here's the completed project

Nice. We need a couple better pictures of the tank with the stripes installed though.

i'm the worlds worst at taking pics...but i'll work on them.  I'm getting my son back from his mom today and i promised him a ride on the the bike so after a few low speed laps around the single lane road i'll try to get her in the sun for some better pics.

here are a few pics of the tank at night with a flash. I didn't realize the center stand was hitting the chain so i had to install the bracket that came with the mac4-1 to stop this.  Here i thought it was just an extra piece that i was supposed to throw away.

thanks dude.

The gf picked out the color. It's called shocker yellow, looks green to me.

and i'm super glad the project is over so i can enjoy fishing again.  I thought she was going to push the bike off into the lake if i didn't get it off the porch/dock.

ive been able to put almost ten miles on the bike since getting her back on the road.  Between parenting duties and rain it seems i have no time to ride.

The chain seemed a bit rough causing vibrations any given rpm so i have a new chain on order, hopefully it will be here by the weekend.

tonight i'll go home and adjust the cam chain to hopefully take away some of the rattle noise i'm hearing at idle.
