Yes I've got a tick too?...
« on: July 17, 2013, 05:14:35 PM »
Alright 1980 cb650 ticks when it warm sometimes,it comes and go as it pleases, took 30 miles if highway and city driving today to do it, other days it ticks in town and a run down the highway stops it, high rpms bring it every time. It's NOT an exhaust leak, adjustment has been done numerous times, all other valves have been fine. Complete 3000 mile tuneup has been done, first problem I have noticed I had posted a pic before of the tapped adjuster beat up and wore at an angle on the bottom, valve tip looks fine, springs aren't broke, new adjuster was put in and it came back. If you put a stethoscope on the engine at intake number 1 where the tick is coming from you can hear it a little but if you stick it on this bolt it's hammering loud

Crappy pic of the tapped adjuster

I should say its definitely a metallic tick and its been loud enough at times with my helmet on I can hear it cruising down the road at 60. I've pulled the rocker shaft bolt out and measured it and compared it to the one in front of it they measure the same but have nothing to reach into the shaft to measure, it looks round not oblong

Was that tappet screw off an intake valve? I am sure you adjusted the tappet when it was new but have you readjusted it after some miles? It may have deformed a bit to conform to the valve.

How many miles are on the bike?

Yes that's off the intake valve that's hammering hard now, I put it in last night and went for a ride, it started ticking within a mile and slowly got louder on my 5 or so mile ride, readjusted this morning and had no problems until after about 30 miles, will readjust again in the morning along with another oil change, switching to 20-50 after the 10-40 I put in it last week, had to get a new oil filter bolt as mine is trashed and couldn't change it last week but anyhow the bike has almost 27,000 on it

Just a guess here: It sounds like the intake valve is sluggish. Meaning it's still open a bit when the tappet goes to push it down. If this typically starts at higher revs then it could be valve float from a weak spring. It could also be contaminents on the valve stem causing the valve to drag in the guide. I am a big fan of SeaFoam which does a good job of breaking down carbon build up and also lubricates the top end. Try running a tank through and see if it helps. You'll want to recheck the tappets afterward to make sure you're not tight.

Have you noticed any, even the slightest, popping or backfiring, most likely around the carb? May be hard to here at higher revs. This would support my theory.

No popping or backfiring and I've got sea foam in it now as of yesterday, been wondering about the same thing you mentioned, weak spring hmmm, I'll tear into it this winter

That's all I can come up with right now. I will point out that the new tappet screw is likely to be damaged if you continue to ride, as well as the top of your valve. That will mean having to cut the tip of the valve off to get it out for replacement as well as a seat cut/lap.

There's enough damage to the valve now even though it looks very minor to warrant a repair this winter, besides I gotta replace the pucks to stop my oil leak, gives me something to do this winter I guess or just an excuse to fix it up more hehe

Just an FYI but I did find they use the same adjustment bolts in Honda cars as well in case anyone reading this doesn't have a motorcycle shop around and wants faster than ordering online
