my guess is it's a friction pad for the "cruise control" screw. i was wondering if there was something like that in there. never bothered to look it up.

I think they are copper colored , but may be spring steel.

Its not a solid pad its a strip of thin steel bent so its as if it was round the outside of a bananna, If i can find one i will photo it and put it up BUT if it aint before saturday it wont be till end of August 'cos i am away for a rest!!

I am surprised that it is steel faced, as I would assume it works by friction against the nylon throttle collar.
Anyway I need one, and will make something that will wear before the throttle piece does.

Confirming Bryan: its steel strip, curved and bent. AS it bends back it doesn't complete the loop. That allows the screw to flex the lower part of loop like a spring pushing the top slider part into the pipe throttle.

It is very smooth and countoured to the pipe throttle, so don't fear wear. You want something that is tough enough to provide friction and hold against the return spring and slick enough that you can still turn the twist grip against the friction. So contact patch area is key, which that setup has.

I think for US markets at least there was a serious liability issue. I mean you could tighten up the screw and get in serious trouble.  ITs good to have for a restoration but not practical in use in my opinion. Other than holding throttle positions while tuning.

The better alternative is the vistacruise or its counterparts which can be engaged and flipped off with a thumb move.

I guess I agree. BMW used a similar device, which when I was a kid, allowed for riding no hands. I reckon now, in reflection, after 40+ years, perhaps that was a little irresponsible.

I still want one though!

I used a piece of solid square bar cut to length and in the 'top' I filed a curve to match the diameter of the throttle with a half-round file.
The square bar I used came from a door handle; it's the bar that goes through a  domestic house door to connect the one side door knob with the other. I think it's 8mm square?
There's no reason for it to be a springy arrangement. I tighten the screw to the desired degree and the external coil spring keeps the pressure on the screw to keep it from unscrewing.
