1981 Honda CB650 charging problems...I hate pushing my bike
« on: August 10, 2006, 10:03:17 AM »
So I have a major charging problem with my bike. I have nearly replaced everything and still can't get over 12V to the battery. New Alternator Rotor, Stator, Voltage Rectifier, and new Battery. After about 20 minutes on the road or just idleing the battery it is completely drained. I have cleaned the connections and put grease on them and used pliars to squeeze them tight, however still only at 11.9 volts to the battery. All the parts that I have put on are used but all seem to test fine. I really don't know where to go from here, any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks in advance

Oh yeah not sure if this would be a problem with the charging but I did notice that my CDI ignitors are kind of melted on the back???

I have tried some of the electrosport fault finding but I'm not that skilled to go through the whole thing, or the equipment besides the 2 meters I have (digital and needle)

is your ground good!!!!!!!  sometimes it can be something as simple as your ground wire.  Make sure it is snug to a paint free spot on the frame!!!!!

Which ground are we talking about, battery ground or one of the many others??  I know there is one that is questionable that goes from the RR line to the battery, no where for it to be grounded to so not sure if it just supposed to be free or not

If you've replaced your regulator/rectifier, rotor, and stator, there's not really much else in the charging system besdies connections.

On the R/R there are two connectors. One has 3 wires and the other has 5 wires. In the 5-wire connector, the bottom three (should be all yellow) are the output wires from your three-phase alternator (hence the three wires). The top two wires are the field wires. Somehow disconnect those two wires from your regulator and hook 12v straight to them (on the alternator side, not the regulator side). With those two wires connected, rev the engine and check battery voltage. If your voltage doesn't go up, you've got a problem with your rotor or stator. If it does go up, I would suspect the regulator.
