Barber's 9th Annual
« on: August 05, 2013, 06:01:43 PM »
Has anyone stayed at Tent lot D?  I was in lot B two years ago and didn't care for it so I stayed in lot C last year.  Lot C is already sold out so I got lot D.  Looks like it's over in the motocross area.

Isn't that down in a low spot?  I recall that area flooding under heavy rain, and it hasn't rained on that weekend in a few years...
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Rain hasn't been holding off much this summer anywhere. Isn't there an area c that is RV and then the tent camp down a little lower?

If that's the case than there would be twice as many campers than last year, can't see how it could fill up.

I will consult the map and edit, looks like I'm thinking lot b.

Send pm

Key we're in "d," and we probably don't mind collecting more people. We can just squeeze you in next to the neighbors.  You on Bikes? I think we're going to Ashville afterwards, maybe we caravan with the locals?

As it says Next WEEK.

We have an extra three day entry pass , too, would sell one.

Hey Diddy, thanx for the offer. Yes, we are on bikes. I've secured a hotel room, but would still rather camp on site. We are coming in on Friday, and heading back Sunday morning. Asheville is about an 8hr ride back, and its a beutiful ride through back roads. We'd love some company back on Sunday, and we can fill you in on all the great spots in Asheville. Shoot me a PM with your name and number. Thanx!

See you guys down there. We will be riding from Boston on Sunday, hoping to have a couple of nice days to ride around on the Blue Ridge and environs. I will be wearing a black long sleeve Lars Anderson Classic European Motorcycle Day tee shirt, if anybody spots my carcass and wants to say hi.

Friday and Saturday were beautiful, if a little warm for a couple of new england guys.
We had alot of fun!
Positives ( Please note my opinions are subjective, and are easily refutable)

The Museum, I do not anticipate finding anything as comprehensive and immaculate. One can get as close as possible to most bikes and cars, although no touching. This was enjoyable for me when checking out design features and race bike fabrication parts.

The grounds are immense, and while I am no judge, the track appears well laid out, with many good spectator viewing and camping spots.

I also enjoyed the camaraderie of the folks, both staff and attendees. It was fun to be around so many folks who shared my enthusiasm and joy in being there.

Negatives
Admittance and parking were at times a long and frustrating process. Jim French arrived with a trailer and his turbo midday Saturday, and had such a tough time finding a spot, he didn't stay.i was looking forward to meeting him!

Prices for the swap meet appeared generally too high to me, but perhaps I'm a cheap bastard.
I was surprised there weren't more vendors for new accessories.
I was disappointed that non bidders were excluded fr9m the auction.
it was difficult for me to understand which race classes were running. There was a track announcer, but I did not catch much of what he said, and I did not see a program.

Anyway, it was a fun time, and I will post some photos when we get back to Boston later this week, as I can't deal with making the photo files small enough to post here on my cell phone.

Second year for me. I did not seek out other members here. Too much to do and not enough time to do it.

The museum is incredible. The racing was a lot of fun as usual. The workers were always polite and helpful. I would say it is growing in attendance rapidly. lines to get in saturday were bad if you waited much past 9 am to get in. That said, they roll people in about as fast as you could expect.

My biggest complaint is that the harley crowd attendance is increasing. I have no problem with the harleys, just don't care to go to another "harley" event with crappy chrome helmets and seas  of the same ole baggers to look at. I go to this event to see bikes I cant see everywhere else and it still has that in spades. Just hate to see it diluted with guys that think the only motorcycle  ever made is a harley. Hopefully this doesn't come across as a rant.

We took an extended loop through Atlanta and to Ahsville. Nice to see the guys on the road that brought the old beat up stuff a couple hundred miles or more, and on the road. Harleys on the road could have been from any Sunday drive, but the rusty 750's etc were surely comming  from Barber.

I agree , if anyone has a choice,  bring out the old stuff instead.

It was the bomb (again)!  Attended by 60000+.   Camping was sheer anarchy though, they way oversell those camping places.  I had to squeeze next to a motorhome, I'm sure it wasn't a legal spot but I camped there all three days.  If anyone saw a gray Suburban right at the entry to lot D, that was me.  Took my CT90 (which immediately broke down) and my 650...

Got a few pics, but they aren't here with me. Lots of them are museum bikes.

Record crowd is what the magazine article says, largest vintage gathering in the country.

Did anyone happen to see any nice 400f's for sale?  I had a last minute business trip and had to go to Nebraska.  Arrrgh, nice people but not Barber Vintage for sure.

I think I saw one or two 350 fours but I dont recall seeing a 400 for sale. There were 60,000 ( I think) people there so I possibly missed one.

This reminds me of Laconia years ago. It used to be when the AMA raced at the old Bryar track almost everyone rode into the area and went to the race track. Eventually the posers arrived on trailers and no-one even knew there were races going on. For years now it's a Weir's Beach only affair. People watching people, and that's ok, just not for me. I have a friend that doesn't even take his bike anymore but still goes every year.

I was at Barber a few years back and the crowd was no where near that large, a true vintage event. Mid Ohio is another. Right now Barber is like Woodstock, everyone would like the experience. Eventually the novelty may wear off and crowds won't continue to increase.

My highlight was the swap meet probably.  I spent a lot of time there but didn't buy anything.  The shows were pretty good too.  Those Wall of Death guys always put on a good show and there was a trials show too this year.
