76 CB550F - Oct 2021 - Rear tail light and rebuilding gauges
« on: August 12, 2013, 02:42:16 PM »
I bought this 76 550F for $500 earlier this year and due to having a baby, I have been chipping away at it slowly.

The most current status and purchased pics are attached.

I had a local guy powder coat the frame with a satin black and had Harisuluv clean and rebuild the carbs. They look awesome!

I rebuilt the top end- new gaskets all around.  It was leaking like a sieve- the head gasket plopped right off as the surfaces were covered in the copper gasket stuff.  It did not stick to the gasket, only the aluminum- that was hell to remove.  But, with patience, beer and music, I finally had all the surfaces clean. If I find one more gasket...!

After the motor went in, I put on the center stand with a new spring from DSS.  I painted the swingarm and centerstand with por15 and topcoated with a semi-gloss from duplicolor.

I installed new tapered bearings in the stearing stem, and installed the forks with new gaiters. Got a repro seat cover from ebay, and put that on yesterday to see how it looks.  I'm installing the larger turn signals, because I like the looks of those better, and found the F sissy bar from Tews-
There's a lot left to assemble, and hopefully I'll be able to spend a couple hours a night after baby goes to sleep.  She starts daycare in a couple of days, so hopefully she'll be tired at the end of the day!

There are quite a few things I really want to do, but I might wait until this winter- riding season is getting shorter and shorter!

I'm getting ready to put the rear wheel and brakes on and am continuing to clean and repaint as I go. Here are the pegs:

Got a couple of hours in today while baby napped :)

Carbs are on:

Airbox is in:

Battery box is in:

I have a few questions about this filter I have and the original airbox parts at the bottom, but that'll have to wait til tomorrow as it's time to take the baby to the sitter for the evening.

Got the rear brakes, kickstand and wheel on this morning.

Almost forgot the little spring for the switch:

Figured I'd coast down the driveway :)

I thought the fire hydrant was some sort of mascot at first.   ::)

Depending on your riding style, you may like superbike bars better. They are lower but do not change the look. Great buy for 17 bucks plus shipping. I put on everyone of my bikes..

I'll probably do that. I want to put on some SS brake lines, but I thought I'd wait until the seat's on to see how the ride position is. I wouldn't mind coming across a 400f set of bars that are drilled for the wiring, too. We'll see.

Does anyone think that using bolts in place of the seat hinge pins is a bad idea? I mean, will the threads screw up the hinges or finish?

A couple 6mm bolts and a few washers and nuts fit perfect. (Haven't tightened them down yet)

I think you sent two with this seat, but I totally lost them. If you have more that would be awesome.

I had to do a quick preview. I should almost be done with it this next weekend.  How does everyone feel about black fenders in these bikes?

Ya, I agree. Mine are fine, but I might have to build a Triumph next to satisfy my black fender desire :)
