CB550 Clutch Issues
« on: August 17, 2013, 08:00:31 PM »
I have a 1975 CB550 and my clutch is slipping, getting worse and worse.

I have found a few used ones which apparently work.

I have also found springs for a clutch rebuild.

Any thoughts o buying a working used one vs rebuilding my current one.

I haven't worked on a clutch before but I don't think it would pose a huge problem.

Also, for a rebuild, all I need are springs?

Thanks guyd

You need new friction plates, sometimes driven plates too, as those are the ones that wear out just like your brake pads. The springs usually don't need changing but check to make sure they are within spec.

If you buy a used set, look up the specs in the manual and make sure that the friction and driven plates are within service thickness and true (not warped).

You may need a new gasket and if you have any oil leaks from the cover it's a good time to change the O-rings and oil seal.
