The reason xylene improves gas mileage has something to do with chemical bonds. I'm not Walter White so honestly I don't know the exact science behind it.

I have no idea why and would like to know

I have experienced the exact same thing but in a car, it was a slug and pinged its head off under load on its recommended fuel, I put premium in it after a recommendation from a good mechanic I've known all my life and the car was transformed, it went a hell of a lot better, and I didn't imagine it .... ::)

I tried xylene and couldn't tell any difference at all
Acetone did give a noticeable performance boost and probably far worse mileage (as I used more throttle all the time  ???  ;D )

It is the reason. I cant find the literature at this immediate moment, but there is a whole scientific explanation about how the gasoline bonds to the xylene and creates a cleaner? economical? mixture.
