CB550F air filter/box vs CB550K
« on: August 25, 2013, 11:20:34 AM »
Crawling around in the dark at the bike place I found a 550 airbox and internals and brought it home for my 550K. Turns out the box/parts are for a 550F. The inner "drainage" part has a little tube that sticks out farther than the K model one apparently, and thus my old air filter that I had laying around doesn't fit down. Can I run a 550F air filter or would that not work well with K carbs? Or should I just cut this little pipe shorter? I'd rather not cut it and just use an F filter since I gotta get a new filter anyhow but sure don't wanna mess with jetting over it.

All the Cb550 Filter boxes are marked CB550F, and they all function the same.

The breather tube height is non critical with any CB550 Filter I've tried.  However, filters made for the CB500 won't work with them.

I've replaced all my stock paper filters with the UNI NU4055.  It's foam, but can be cleaned and reused for many years. Less expensive than replacing the stock one every year.

Ok sounds good. I figured it wouldn't matter enough to alter jetting. The K model air filter has a tube/wall going inside the oval opening about an inch deep whereas the F does not, just wide open. Some kindof restriction or something that they could just take off for the F? I don't know.

TwoTired, does the Uni filter need to be oiled like the K&N filters that are oiled foam?

Yes, the Uni has a cleaner/oiling kit.  Lasts a long time, though.

I would assume what you are calling an F filter is actually a Cb500 filter.  The CB550s had no breather at all in the bottom of the filter box.
All my CB550K and F filters are the same.

According to the parts books i have the CB550F has the same air filter as the 550K3 with the foam filter at the bottom of the box and a standpie the goes into the centre of the paper element to recirc the crankcase emissions
