Saddle bag keys

Hey all,

I'm thinking of picking up an old pair of Bates bags to put on my 750 but the key that comes with them is broke in two pieces. I contacted a few locksmiths in my area and they said they'd have to see the pieces of the key to tell me if they have a blank and can make a replacement. I'd hate to invest money into a pair of bags that I can't unlock. Are these blanks tough to come by? A search on Google hasn't produced anything. Anyone have any experience with this?

Any chance you could get a good picture of the key?  I have an old set of Bates hard bags, and I have a feeling they didn't use that many different keys for their locks.  There's a slight chance my key may match yours, and if that's the case I could get a copy of mine and send it to you.

Was able to source a pic. Let me know what you think Gordon. I worked in a hardware store years ago cutting keys and that blank seems like it'd be fairly common.

I don't think the bag locks actually have tumblers like a pad lock( I could be wrong) That key also looks like any typical Craftsman tool box key or a gas cap key. It doesn't hurt to try one to see if it will open them.

Thanks for the added bit of info, Chuck. I'm pretty confident a blank can be found. Time to pull the trigger on those bags!

take it to an Ace or hardware store.  That key looks like an Ilco so its a replacement at that.  They can set it in the jig and cut a new one if thats the case.

I can't say with 100% certainty due to the slightly blurry picture, and his looks more worn down, but I'd call that a match.  If you have any trouble finding another key or getting a copy made, let me know and I'll see if I can get a copy cut to send to you.
