New guy from New York
« on: September 02, 2013, 06:09:41 AM »
I picked up a 1977 CB550 Supersport at a garage sale a few weeks ago. I wasn't really hunting for one, but it caught my eye. I got it running, but it needs a tune up for sure. I did all the basic stuff, oil change, new plugs, adjusted the valves. I tried to adjust the cam chain tensioner, but the lock nut was frozen solid on the screw. Sooo... Off came the head and carbs. The carbs were very dirty, so I guess it's a good thing that I am taking the time to do it up right. Not sure if I want to keep it stock or turn it into a cafe racer. I am concerned about running out of warm weather up here in NY, but this should keep me busy all winter!

Welcome for Downstate NY. Plenty to learn here.

Thanks!
Tews, I've already seen some horrific pics of other bikes here, so I guess I'm lucky to have found one in relatively decent shape. If by "tins" you mean the tank and fenders, I would like to keep that original.

If the exhaust is shot you may want to look into a MotoGPWerks... Got mine last week for my 77 550F build...

Thank you tool14!

Tews19, as soon as I saw that MotGPwerks exhaust of yours, I called them and left a message. I hope he gets back to me! Hope the price doesn't scare me...

sinister902, I am halfway between Buffalo and Rochester.

By the way, I'm in need of a cam chain tensioner for my '77 CB550.

sinister902, I think I have a line on a cam chain tensioner. If the deal falls through I will hit you up, thanks!

MOONDOGNYC, thank you! I am going to start a build thread in the project forum. Right now I'm torn between getting it running and functioning really well while keeping it on the cheap and looking a little rough, or going hog wild and dumping a ton of money into and making it mint.

Do it right... if not, you will wind up spending money twice on parts you're not ultimately happy with...just sayin'....HOG WILD !
