Colorful insects are this way normally as warning to birds or other animals that might consider eating them or messing with them.

Lots of tree frogs are quite colorful and many have poisonous glands. I have heard that some people will catch them and lick them, the poison is a hallucinogenic for humans.

When I was a teenager I mowed yards to raise money in the summer. One yard I mowed had a tree which attracted catepillars which would leave a welt that was quite painful if you brushed up against it. When they arrived we would give the tree a wide berth. They blended into the foilage and were nasty buggers.

I was harvesting grapes  and brushed it with my hand by accident.  Really, I am not that type, I only have to pee on a fence once  :)

Larry, do you want me to mail it to you?  See if it gets you too :)

We got 'em here in Oz too. We call them spitfires. Don't know the correct biological name though. They do pack a punch for their size. But then most critters here seem to want to kill you one way or another, even 'roos and you wouldn't want to mess with a cassowary.

Colorful insects are this way normally as warning to birds or other animals that might consider eating them or messing with them.

From there you get mimicry of two types, Batesian and Mullerian.  Finding out what those are or if they are spelled correct is what google is for. I used to know.
