A some what cheap alternative to fuel line hose clamps
« on: September 09, 2013, 06:29:58 PM »
Small zip ties work very good. I was looking for some fuel line clamps on my bench looked down and said what the heck I'll try them grabbed the mini zip ties and they hold the line nice and tight. Then just cut off the extra line nice and clean plus you can get different colors
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

+1 for the zip ties. I've been using them for quite a while. Easy, cheap, and functional.

I don't trust zip ties under any variable temp situation. They seem to....unzip on me. Trying to get access to where the line enters the carbs on my 550...yikes. I want whatever I put there to last another 40 years. Those things are worth their weight in gold.

I left the gas on when i parked my 550 on sunday and came back to see a half a tank of gas all over the ground and it was still pouring out of the line where it goes into the carbs for 1 and 2. i had to ride 30 miles back home turning the gas on and off every 5 seconds hahaha I tried to get a clamp in there without taking the carbs off...yea, right. So, I grabbed the old zip tie and it was still a huge pain in the ass to get on but I pulled that sucker so tight I don't think she is going anywhere anytime soon haha

Just my take but most things made out of cheap plastic eventually fail, especially in a harsh environment. Go with some real fuel line in 3/16" ,works out to 4.8mm and you will not have to worry about it or clamps again  :) I bought this whole spool at a hardware store closeout for $12.00 and it has worked very well on all my Honda's I have put it on.

+1 on the 3/16" fuel line.  Works great, no clamps, and i even get the clear stuff from Helix so I can see the fuel being delivered.  They even make it in all the colors of the rainbow so you can match your paint  8)

3/16" does work but it's tiiiiiigghttt. At least if we're talking about the replacement line for the 750 which is 5.5mm. I bought some 7/32" fuel line from a rec supply store (ATVs, dirt bikes, etc) and it fits very well. Slides on and off pretty easy and no leaks with no clamps needed.

Iron is correct as it is a tight fit, usually heat the end up first with a heat gun and with a little grease or spit it goes on easier. I need to try a little of that 7/32 someday.

You can also use thin wire twisted onto the fuel line. The wire I use is from garbage bags box. You know the kind with the paper on it. Just remove the paper and you have a small piece of wire that you can spin with a set of long tipped needle nosed pliers. I always use the 7/32nd clear line without having to use the wire. I can buy it at the local Nebraska Motorcycle parts store here in Omaha for like 5 bucks for 2 or 3 foot of it. It will usually last 2 years before it is so hard it needs changing out, along with the carb T's O-rings... ;)
