greetings from Toronto
« on: September 17, 2013, 12:49:49 PM »
Hi, another newbie here from Toronto. Just picked up a CB350F, not sure if she's a '72 or '74. The ad (from kijiji) I bought it off stated it was a 72, but the ownership papers say '74. This is my first bike and I don't know much, or anything at all, about mechanics or motorcycles. Just got my M2 a month ago. Unfortunately, it said the bike was in "perfect mechanical condition" and when I brought her home, cold starting the engine is a workout everytime, as it takes about 5 minutes of using the kickstart, has a small gas leak and oil leak when the engine is running and also has the horrible front brake squeal.
Hopefully I can learn a thing or two from reading through the forum. But in the meantime, I'll probably have a mechanic take care of most or all of these issues (which will probably cost me another $1000)

Anyways, here she is:

Welcome to the world of motorcycling...you have a lovely bike.  It definitely doesn't look like a 74, but you should be able to confirm the actual date by the serial numbers.

As to your stated problems, they are not uncommon and can likely be rectified.  However, finding a good mechanic/garage to do the work can be a challenge if not expensive.  Learning to do it yourself can be rewarding and not too difficult for most.  This forum has lots of good advice and information - if you can't find it, just ask.  You should start by downloading thee manuals and become familiar with those.  BTW, you mentioned a "gas leak" - where is it leaking from?  Also the "oil leak"?

Nice another one from Toronto. Charge or replace your battery. The battery is very important when starting the bike. Also pull your plugs and see if they are to wet to have a reliable spark. Make sure you use full choke when cold starting and asjust the idle screw to give it a bit more gas especially in weathers this week.

Welcome to the forum.  Agreed on the advice to have a fully charged battery.  I keep mine on a trickle charger at all times.
