What bike to look for after finishing my 750K8?
« on: September 23, 2013, 12:43:09 AM »
I found a 78 750F for a good price . Not sure if I should get it or look at restoring a different one. So, help the new guy out. What would be a good bike to look for, easier to find parts?

The 78F has some challenges, I would look for up to 76K.

The main problem with 78F is the head, the guides tend to get loose around 20 -30000 miles and they need to be replaced together with valves, retainers and springs.  How do I know?  I have F3 engine on my bench waiting for the cash to continue.  Check out CycleX for their F special area.

On the other hand, 78F has dual front disc, disc break in the rear, you could find wheels that are made to accept tubeless tires, i heard the transmission is stronger than early Ks.

1977-1979 GS750. Way more bike without all the cb750 popularity bloat in price. Plus it actually handles decent. You already did one cb750 - try something different (says the guy who owns 6 cb750s).

You can help me unload a 73 cb500 that I may be getting soon.  ;) I have someone interested in my 550 and wants to trade his 500 along with some cash. The guy will be stopping by tomorrow with it and we'll see if a deal can be made.

I'd love a '78F, even if I had to get new valves.

I think having a twin in the mix is lots of fun!

Kz1000, parts are not as plentiful as Cb's but I've yet to be skunked when I've needed something. The added cc's are a big plus as well.

I remember reading good things about 82 CB900 - lot of improvements over the early CB.
