Speedo bouncing

I've greased up my cable and the speedo still flutters about. Any ideas?

I get a slight bouncing in my TACH. Never though to ask why. I add this to your question.

i have that happening to both my tach, and speedo, thats why i put the sigma push bike speedo on my bike, over 100kph i cant read either of them....

I have gotten that on and off. I think iI read in this forum that the innards of the gauges get dry. It is a winter project to take them apart.

Remove cable from speedo end. Ride about 10 MPH and grab the end. If it slows or stops, it is slipping at the wheel. Make sure wheel is tight side to side and the speedo drive shoudl not rotate on axle.

This happend to me a bit before both my speedo and tach cables broke.
When I replaced both cables - the bouncing stopped.
Zero bounce.

Not too sure if it a coincidence, but it solved the bouncing on my bike.

just a little kink in the speedo or tach cables can cause a bounce, if you replace them and they still do it then it is "winter project" time

I can't guarantee this, but I read somewhere that you should not grease the cables but lubricate with a thin oil. The argument was that grease held any dust or crap that got in until the cable no longer turned smoothly but had a sort of winding up and unwinding twist. This causes the biunce on the needle.

I have the same problem.

In an effort to decide what causes this, I took the speedowire off the front wheel and connected it to my Dremel instead.

Ran the speedo up to 160 kmph (100 mph) and the needle was rock solid.

Did the same thing with the tacho and got the same result.


Conclusion:

It´s not the wires that causes the flutter in my case.

The wire drives a magneto in the instruments.

When the magneto spins, the magnetic force causes the needle to swing.

The needle is held back with a tiny spring, and at speed it´s the equivalent force of the magneto and the spring that shall keep the needle still.

This works just fine when the instrument is still, but the vibrations of the engine, bumps in the road and other irregulaties upsets this equilibrium.

On an instrument that has spent so much time on the road (as Hondas do... 8)), the clearences are not perfect anymore and that only makes the problem worse....

My 2 cents.... ;)

so do you think that we all have been riding a bit faster than we thought.  At about 70 mph the needle bounces from 62 to 82, so i just assumed 70 or so!
